.17 bullet accuracy

I have had good luck with 20gn Vmax and 25gn Berger in my .17 FB, but was wondering what you guys have had the best luck with in the accuracy department. I was thinking about trying some 30gn Kindlers when I get my new rifle built, but want to get your opinions and experience with the most accurate bullets in your guns first. My new rifle will have a 26" Lilja 1-9 twist barrel chambered in .17-204.

My 17-204 shoots best with the 30 kindlers, but I have only tried three bullets. However I am certain that these are the most accurate in my gun. Mine has a 26" krieger with a 1in9 twist. Every gun has its own taste. keep us posted on that new 17-204.

I have tried the Hornady 20 and 25 grain vmax's and their 25 grain hp. The best group out of my cooper in .17 fireball was the 25 grain vmax's. I have not tried anything heavier than that.

My 2 fireballs loved the 25gr Bergers the best it seemed. I tried a few others went back to them in the end they where just great shooting bullets

I don't mean to highjack the thread, but I was wondering where you got your barrel for the 17-204 fatboy? Or did you have someone ream it for you, and if so, do you happen to know where the gunsmith got the reamer from? I am also interested to see what bullets everyone is haveing luck with. I have shot the 30gr bergers in my 17 Rem and had pretty decent groups, but am thinking that I could do a little better with the 25's.

Chan Nagel makes some super accurate bullets. With his 25 grainers I'm consistantly under 1/2" out of my CZ 527 in .17 Remington. My Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .17 Fireball likes the 25 grain Berger's.

My .17-.204 seems to like the 30 gr. Kindler Golds also. Shot the best groups of my life with it awhile back. Do have plans to try Nagels as I just can't seem to leave well enough alone. Good luck, Dave.

My .17 Fireball loves the 20 gr Vmax and it really loves the Kindler 25 grain BT Hp bullets!!!I have not had a load that this rifle does not shoot under 1/2 moa.

Kevin Weaver did the gun, I sent him a new never shot 700 and he got the krieger barrel and used his reamer. He has a web site and lists many wildcats that he can do. I still have the original never shot 204 barrel. I have a picture on my cell phone of a 3 shot group clover leaf shot at 200 yards on a calm day. Can't say it will shoot like this every time, but this was the only three shots I shot that day, I was just checking my zero after missing two foxes a few days before. This gun only has a 4.5 to 14 burris on it and still has the sps stock that I bedded and reinfoced with epoxy and quarter inch aluminum rods. Some time I want to try a higher power scope and maybe drop it in a better stock. I shot the 20 grain nagels also as well as the gunhause 30,s all shot well but the 30 kindlers were the most accurate. I try to use the 20 nagles on fox if I think the shot will be less than 200 yards. Which is most of the time. I have only shot fox with the nagles so far but next season will use the thirtys so I can see how they work.

My .17rem has a PN barrel, she ain't picky on what she likes. I've ran Midway 20gr HP, Berger 25gr, and 30gr Golds. Loved them all.

Currently running Berger 25gr Match in mine.

I was wondering about the reamer, because a good friend of mine is a gun smith and could do the reaming, and have not been able to find a reamer to rent. I was wondering if they ahd to special order the reamer or not. Thanks for the info though. I would look into a 17-204 on an encore barrel. I would like to shoot the 30 grs at or a little over 4000. It seems like the 17's shoot better at or close to that speed. I know it is not always true, but from the people I talk to and from my own experience, it seems to be this way most of the time. That is why I am going to drop back down to the 25's.

I just shot some of the 30gr Nagels in the 17Rem this week. They chron'ed at a little over 3700fps and shot great the best part is that the 27gr Kindler the 25gr Nagel and the 30gr Nagel all shot into the same group at 200 yds. That's convenient!
