17 caliber AR

I have been thinking about a new AR in 17 caliber. I would like one to be fairly accurate, but I would give up a bit of accuracy for lighter weight. I would like to see the rifle come in around 7-1/2#. It would be used for shooting out to 250 or 300 yards. And everything up to coyote sized critters.

Is anyone making an affordable rifle with those characteristics?? No specific 17 caliber. Just one capable of doing the intended job. Thanks, Tom.

We have quite a few very excellent rifle builders on here. Contact one and I am sure you will not be disappointed.

The only one I have seen is from Alexander Arms. I don't know how much it weights and I don't know if it will reach out that far. ( I am talking about the 17 HMR) Other than that I have not seen anyother 17 caliber AR's

I went to the Black Hole web site but didn't see anything on there about 17's. But I will keep checking back. Any builders on here-please contact me. Tom.

I have a 17 Remington DTech AR and have taken it out on two different hunts lately.

Venatic I went to the D-tech site, and I will be giving them a call. Did you buy your lower from them?? Would you tell me a litle bit more about your rifle?? I see they offer a few differnt 17 chamberings. I like the looks of the 17-223. I should be able to use regular AR mags with that??

Thanks for any additional information. You have been a great help. How heavy is yours?? D-Tech says any contour is available so I should be able to get the weight down. Thanks Again, Tom.

Mine was a gun that Mike made several years ago for a PM member here and I ended up with it. It has a 24" Shilen heavy barrel, fluted, with a 1/9 twist I believe. To be honest I cannot remember the brand of lower and I am not sure if its a lower from Mike or not. Its lower/upper and barrel have been coated by Birdsong's and the FF tube and stock are dipped.
If you are going with a 17 center-fire I recommend at least a 22" barrel to get decent performance.Mine weighs right at 10 lbs and yes it just uses regular .223 magazines.

I started building .17 Remington uppers about 18 years ago, and still build them. Last year I also added the .17 Tactical to my line-up.

Venatic has it right on barrel-length. I have built some 20" .17's, but to get the best out of the .17, you should have at least a 22" barrel.

Can you build one with a 22" barrel and still keep the weight down?? I have a 10# Rock River Varminter. I am not wanting another 10# AR rifle. I want to trim at least 2# off that weight. At least. And max. distance shooting will be 300 yards-so do I actually need the full performance of the 17-223 or the 17 Tactical?? How much am I really going to loose on a 17 caliber?? I know about other caliber's?? But not the 17. Tom.

Yes. The .17 caliber bore is so small that a smaller diameter barrel can be used and still have great accuracy. An HMC contour barrel fluted under the hand guard should put a complete rifle in at about 7 pounds, or perhaps a little less. (less optics of course)

Myself, I'm looking hard at the 17/223. Talked to a guy who has one and he said making the brass is just like reloading anything else; one resizing pass, and no fireforming. Best of all... you don't have to stress about losing your brass! I have a couple 17 Remingtons now and I make sure both my son and I have ALL brass accounted for. That dang 17 Remington brass is something I don't want to be flinging out my AR, at least here in the brush of Western Washington.
