Yes and no,,, the problem with 700 actions has long been the actual length of the action where FB based cartridges are concerned. It had nothing to do with the original rifles chambering (223, 222, 222M, 221, 204, 17Rem) doesn't matter,, same "ejection" issues.
That's why Remmy relocated the "EJECTOR" when they released the 17FB. Even then there's gossip about some of the first FB's getting out of the factory with the old style ejectors (I think SoTex has one), and even more gossip about certain rifles not ejecting properly if the bolt's cycled to fast or to slow yadda yadda yadda. Based on my experience with a "9twist" SPSTac showing up at my house with a "12twist" barrel, neither would surprise me, but I haven't actually seen either of these anomalies and won't swear to it.
I guess the bottom line is, short cartridges cycle better in short little actions like the CZ527 or maybe one of the old Mini Mausers. Course,,, the fact that CZ has CRF and a single stack magazine doesn't hurt matters either.

Can't believe a guy with you're skills and good taste hasn't put a nice skeletonized grip cap on it though.
Course,,, if you had the limited skills I have you could always settle for a plain vanilla MG cap.

This looks like a good spot to ask an opinion. I gave a good friend my wooden stock off my model 7 17FB to cut down for his grandkids model 7 .223 that had a synthetic. What synthetic would you replace it with? I am thinking a McMillan but which model? I am left handed so it would need to be ambidextrous. Would the Game Scout model be too much for a 20 inch barreled FB.

Depending on what type of stock you want, I would look at ....
Game Scout... it would work well since you shoot AR's a bunch.
Classic..... a trim nice feeling stock.
M7 ... which is a factory repro without a cheek piece.


If you want to go lite, get the edge filler in any of those,IIRC.

I was thinking a Game Scout mainly for a 6mm build as I have a Krieger barrel just sitting here with no particular plan BUT now I really need a stock for this gun so I may just call Tim Titus monday and get the ball rolling on a Scout for the FB. Now the colors??? Too many choices.
 
I don't want to hijack this post, but speaking of a grip cap, this was a project for my 20 VarTarg, but I may do one on a future 17 build.

Can anyone tell me if I would run into trouble re- chambering a
17 fireball to 17 Remington? I had two different gunsmith tell me
Differently. One said I would have shell extraction issues, and the
Other said no problem. Any input would be appreciated.
 
I have two 17 Fireballs and a 17 Remington. The Fireballs are a Remington 700 SPS that I dropped into a HS Varmint stock, and a CZ527 Varmint that started life as a 17 Remington and was set back by Bob Green. The 17 Remington is a Cooper 21 Phoenix. They all three shoot .5 MOA. If I had to pick only one, it would be the CZ527. The CZ has a excellent factory trigger, excellent barrel, and great fit and finish. The Cooper is awesome, but at twice the price?
As far a killing power, I have taken Prairie dogs out to 450 yds and Coyotes to 250 with all three. I know the 17 Rem is a little faster, but I see no difference in performance on game. Brass is getting tough to get for either one. Good luck

I took a17 Fireball and rechambered to 17Tac without issue. I can't see where extraction would be an issue either. The extractor is located In a different position on the fireball bolts but it will still work with the longer cases, mine doesn't have any problems.
 
I looked up the muzzle velocity(MV) of the 17 caliber rifles for rimfire and the center fire rounds. The max MV was taken from Hodgons 2013 Annual Manual. Rimfire: 17 HM2 17 Gr V-Max MV 2100 -- 17 HMR 20 Gr XTP MV 2375 -- Centerfire :17 Hornet 20 Gr V-Max 3629 -- 17 Fireball 20 Gr V-Max 4038 -- 17 Rem 20 Gr V-Max 4466 feet per second. I did not compute the muzzle velocity per grain of powder but as the case capacity increases the MV decreases per grain of powder. I use Cooper 57 M LVT RF rifles, Rem 700 CDL SF Fireball, and a Sako 17 Rem. Whenever a CZ or Ruger 17 Hornet becomes available I ll get one. I have yet to find a rifle whoses MV matched published data. I reload for accuracy, my reload for the Fireball uses near the Max powder grains while the best reload for the 17 Rem is near the starting powder grain load. Most all of my shooting is at prairie dogs. There is a lot of shooting within 150 yards when the p dog pups first come out so then I use the RF rifles. Some years ago I used a 243 Win rifle but the p dogs soon became muzzle blast smart so now I like low recoil low muzzle blast cartridges. The next step up is using the 17 Fireball followed by a 204 Ruger rifle. But I expect that the 17 Hornet using a Max load of 10.0 Gr of Lil Gun powder with the 20 Gr bullet will see a lot of use , that is if I can get it to shoot 1/2 inch or less 100 yard groups. Now my 17 Rem rifle is only taken out when hunting larger varmints.

For the type of shooting and the type of usage my 17 calibers get, the 17 Rem. is my choice. I can always load my 17 Rem. down to 17 FB velocities if I need to, but can't load the FB up to 17 Rem velocities.
I can see where a 17HH will be my next purchase. That 17 is about perfect for Fox/Bobcats in my opinion.
 
I have a 17 fireball and a 17 remington, I can't see a lot of difference in the performance of them, I shoot the fireball a lot more than I do the rem but thaat is just me. I believe if you were to own just one 17 I would pick the fireball, it will cover both ends fairly well. I see no good reason to try the 17 hornet but as soon as the CZ becomes available I know I will just because.
 
I have a Remington model 700 sps .17 fireball i'd be willing to part with. Pm me if anyone is interested. About 50 rounds down the tube.
