I am getting ready to sell on of my 835's . I am looking at the .17's for an after season gun . We cannot use anthing larger than a .22 on gamelands after season , so the .17 seams to be the choice . The problem is I do not know anything about them . I have seen everones make a model but to me they all are about the same .

Can someone give me some advice as to which gun I should look at .Also can someone tell what kind of damage the hmr will do to yotes and ground hogs .

Thanks

I use the 17 HMR 17 Gr bullet for shooting prairie dogs out to about 150 Yds. At 150 yards the 17 Gr bullet has about 100 ft/lb of energy. I have read at www.rimfirecenteral.com that some are useing the 17 HMR for loarger varmints.

I have 2 Savage 17HMR. Both shoot great. I shoot 17 gr out of one and 20 gr out of the other one. They are the goods on jack rabbits and lots of fun to shoot. I would say go to your local gun shop and handle a couple different 17's and buy the one that fits you best. I like savage because of the accutrigger and their out of the box accuracy. You will have to make your own choice on which on you like best. Here are a couple of pics of mine.

I have a Marlin 917 SS with a Rifle Basix trigger. I love it! When I bought it, Savage did not make the 17 with an accutrigger, or I would have considered that as well. It definitely likes the 17 gr bullets better, but the 20 gr bullets typically group under 1 1/2" at 100 yards.

I had some initial problems with it. I had a nightmare special ordering it from Walmart, but that isn't the rifle's fault. When I got it, the scope mounting holes were at an angle to the barrel, making me shoot 6" left at 50 yards with the scope cranked all of the way over. This was a well known problem, so I was prepared for it. When I finally got on paper, I thought that I had some serious accuracy issues with the rifle. My first shot was an inch in from the edge of the paper at 50 yards. I couldn't see my next two shots. I walked up to the target and realized that the three shots were in about a 0.1" group. I purchased a set of BKL rings that fit into the dovetails, did a camo job on the whole rig, put in the new trigger, and I am tickled pink with it.

There are a lot of other great 17's out there, but I am very happy with my Marlin.

First off it is not a predator round unless you can head shoot everything at 50 yds. I have not seen it anchor PD's 100% at 100 yds.

If a rimfire is all you can use it is way more accurate than a .22 mag.

Savage would probably be the least expensive and shoot just as well if not better than the expensive ones.

I have a savage17hmr and for squirrels and coons I love it. But if I was looking for something with power, I think i would go with the 22mag. The 17 is more accurate but I beleive the 22mag had more thump behind it. I just dont think the 17hmr is suitable for anyting larger than coons.

Thanks to all . The regs are rimfire only . Which means the Black Cat has to stay at home , for gamelands anyway . So next weekend is the gunshow . Hopefully I will be bring a 17 home , anyone want to guess as to what the wife is going to say ?

Thanks Yall !

I have 5 of them ! 2 Marlins , a Savage , A custom Remington 597 and a CZ 452 American . Thet all shoot real well .
As far as which is the most accurate ?? The Custom 897 shoots the best , them the Marlins . The CZ and the Savage are about the same . They arre all accurate though ! I have never seen a 17 HMR that didn't shoot well !
CZ rimfires are super rifles . They look good and are fit well . If you can get use to that backwards safety !

I'm sorry but if you can't anchor PD's at 100 yards you need to take that gun back and trade it for another one. I've never had a problem killing pd's out way past 100 yards.
