I've tried the 17gr. V-maxes and the 20gr. Gamepoints on groundhogs mostly with some trap dispatching on foxes, coon, skunk, and possum. The 17gr. V-maxes netted me way too many crawl offs on chucks with big shallow wounds on the ones I did recover. On another shooters recommendation, I tried the 20gr. GP's and started shooting heads and shoulder blades as he directed. My recovery rate increased immediately. It was explained to me that the GP's need a bone to start the mushroom effect to make it perform like a big game bullet. I have shot 2 free ranging coons with the HMR and the GP's, one was bang flopped and the other I gut shot and he got back to the den before I could follow up. Doubt any 17HMR bullet would've helped on that deal. I've shot several skunks with the 20gr. GP's, all bang flop. Couldn't tell you how many chucks I've shot with it. It is my favorite rifle/bullet combo when working in and around the barns and buildings on the farm due to lack of crawl offs, low noise, and lack of over penetration while delivering great accuracy. Some of these chucks were pretty healthy and they went right to the dirt. Only the bloody one gave me a fit because I hit it in the nose and it had a lot of kick left in him
.
Some of this years victims.
Ignore the ammo in the stock pack, stole it off the 243 to try the fit.
This one was shot to the left of the red I-beam in the background under the sawmill. I wouldn't dare try that with any other rifle
.
My Marlin also seems to shoot the GP's better than any of the others. I tried all the 20gr. HP's and all the 17gr. Polymer tips I could find out there, it just likes the CCI 20gr Gamepoints the best. Wish I could find a brick of them right now
. The FMJ's shot the worst for me followed by the T-N-T's. V-maxes aren't far behind my favorite GP's for accuracy. Looking forward to some more field testing on free range fox and coons soon.
