I know what this naysayer says. This naysayer says bad liars have one helluva time keeping their stories straight.

I use the xtp and as long as you hit them in the vitals, they will die usually within sight. Those people who have tried the 17 hmr and say it wont kill crap, are the people who cant hit the broadside of a barn. If you are trapping, you cant beat it. It shoots flat and comes in plenty different bullet types for every use. Please don't doubt the 17 hmr, it is a very handy rifle.

What ya got to say now sonny boy?

He'll be sayin "Ooops"

Lost my first fur to the HMR and 20gr. Gamepoints the other night. Big grey around 60yds. Was off the shooting sticks with a red light in a hurry. Had it between his eyes and pulled it down to the chest at the last second for a bigger target. No blood, little hair, and he flipped out and hit the bushes. Not very scientific data since there is nothing to prove where I hit it or if I grazed it or even got into the meat.

I did drop another skunk in his tracks though with the same setup later with a hit below the chin at about 30yds. You guys are going to have to get your own data off him. Like the other 20+ this setup has killed, he gave me the farewell tail twitch and spray goodbye

.

Also shot a possum I treed coming into my trash the other night at about 10yds. I used a 17gr. V-max on him and shot him in the neck quartering away toward the head. Opened him up like a book. Looks like I'll save them for a few more vermin to test on. Had it been good fur, I wouldn't have been happy about him missing half his head and neck. No pictures on that one, he didn't want to comply with the PM TOS aggreement

. Hopefully I can get a V-max or XTP into something photo worthy soon for more comparison.

I did just score another box of Gamepoints this weekend though after much searching

I have killed 6 coyotes and 4 fox with my Savage 93 17hmr rifle using Vmax bullets and have lost 0. That includes dropping 1 large alpha male coyote shot in the heart at about 20 yards and another gut shot at 100+ yards. He ran about 30 yards and dropped. Not bad for a bullet smaller than a 22. I use a Remington R-15 .223 now only because I am too slow with a bolt action and because its freakin awesome, A Savage 93 17hmr is a great affordable gun for someone on a tight budget. It will get the job done if you can hit them in the right spot.

I went a bit extreme trying a ridiculous number of HMR's, I was buying premium quality rifles and scoping them, then trying as many as 14 types of ammo in them at the range to identify which one each rifle shot best....

The results were way different than I'd have expected. While many of the rifles like an Anschutz 1517MPR w/Elite 4200 8-32x were capable of 1/2 to 1/4 inch groups with the ammo they liked best, the ammo the Anschutz didn't like would be an inch and a half at best and 20gr FMJ would be no better than almost three inch groups.

Each rifle has ammo it shoots best with, that said the Winchester and Remington premium rounds shot well out of everything and best in many. The Anschutz if using it's favorite half inch cartridge was deadly on ground squirrels out to 200 yards, but if I used ammo that grouped no better than an inch and a half at 100 yards I'd miss half the shots out beyond a hundred and fifty yards. It was the ammo missing, not me or the rifle.

Many people don't seem to care about beyond a hundred yards pinpoint accuracy, but if you do you need to figure out what shoots best and buy that several boxes or even bricks at a time.

Every rifle is different. My 17 HMR like the 17gr Vmax from Hornady. Shoots sub MOA at 100 yards, and it opens up to about 3-4 inches at 200 yards, on a clear day with no wind. Not that I'd use it that far, it's mostly a 50-100 yard gun, maybe 120 or so at most. But it still hits the target out to 200 yards consistently if needed.
