Took my 17 to my parents house this afternoon for some chippie action. For two and a half hours I stalked the little monsters. My parents house sits on top of a Mt.(eastern)and their yard is about five acres of semi-flat land with the forest completely surronding them. I got 14 today upping the summers total between me my father and nephew to 50. When I left you could hardly tell that I shot any of them. There were still a bunch in the yard. I'll be back out there in the coming week. I can't think of a better way of target practicing than trying to get rid of these pests.

Are you sure they're chipmunks and not 13-lined squirrels? They look very similar, but one is usually protected and the other is usually fair game.

What the heck is a a 13-lined squirrel?

This is what I shoot:

In the east, we have chipmunks but no 13-lined ground squirrels. They're slight variations on the same speices.

I may be old (56) but I love the Beavis and Butthead avatar!!

me!

looks like the gray squirrel didn't make it through the woods very effectively either.

In Pennsylvania, the chipmunks are protected as well!! Most of the woods I hunted there were overrun with the little vermin.

Nice shootin' anyway!

Yep Squirrel those are what I'm shootin also. I'll be up at mom and dads this weekend. Mom just told me that the yard is overrun again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. On each side of their yard there is a pretty good drop. It's fun to sit on the side of the hill and shoot them off of stumps and branches. They fly through the air backwards for a good ways becuase of the slope. I also haven't heard about chippies being protected in PA. My Aunt in Pittsburgh is always getting rid of he little pests.

They are a real pest they'll get in your house and take up residence w/ you.

Are the photos using the polite side of the damage?
I kill them at my grandparents house and a 17hmr dishrags them.
Yeah ME the beavis and butthead avitar is very cool ,oh yeah and by the way you stole my initials!Mike

Mike Eversole,
The first pic is showing the exit holes. That's with a .177 caliber pellet gun. The second pic shows the entrance hole of a quartering away shot. That shot was perfect. It went in behind the ribcage and exited under his left front leg. Totally blowing open the front of his chest.

Have both here and both are legal. Any ground squirrel in Mi is open year round. You cant seem to get rid of them darn chippys though!!! Always a great way to kill some time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The 13 line has markings all that go all the way to the rear and they have dots within the lines. Maybe just a tad bigger than a chipmnunk. They usually have a bigger entrance to thier hole too.

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels are small mammals in the squirrel family (Sciuridae) that reach 4.5 - 6.5 inches in length, excluding their tail. They are brown with a whitish belly and 13 alternating light and dark stripes running the length of their back. Unlike gophers and moles, thirteen-lined ground squirrels have relatively large eyes.

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels are often confused with chipmunks but chipmunks can be distinguished by the way it carries its tail upright when running. They look like little remote controlled cars running around with a protruding antenna. Chipmunks have only two sets of stripes on their back, and the white stripe usually extends around their eyes.

The 13-lined squirrels here in CA are not as distinctly colored as the above pic, usually the dots are a lot milder and they look a lot like a regular chipmunk. In CA, chipmunk are protected.
