17 HMR Issue

I have been having a problem with some 17 HMR ammo. It is the Hornady 17gr. Varmint Express. About 1 out of 3 rounds ends up splitting the case when I fire it and 1 out of 2 of the split cases get stuck in the chamber. I was wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this. The photos below explain it a little better the shell on the right is one that became stuck in the chamber and the on on the right cycled fine.

Thanks
Josh

Since I got my 17HMR about 1-1/2 years ago I have shot over 1000 rds of Hornady, CCI, Winchester Haven't had a split neck or a stuck case yet.
looks like you have a bad lot of ammo.

Just mt 2 Cents worth.

I'll get a split case every now and then also. Never had one get stuck though.

Your cases look kinda strange. I can understand why there is a sooty looking mark on the split one, but it looks like the one that is not split has the same sooty looking mark at about the same place. Chamber issue possibly?

What make is your rifle?

Was thinking the same thing.

The non - split looks too dirty and the shoulders look alittle blown out.

I have about 500 rounds through my M917 with the Hornady 17g vmax round and have yet to have one split or stick in the chamber.
I have seen posts on the 17hmr splitting in many guns though.

Something looks wrong with the brass. I shoot a bunch of HMR, did probably 150 today alone, never had brass come out looking like that. I'd also guess chamber problem.

I don't collect or check what my savage kicks out, afaik I've never had a neck split.

I had a bunch of hornady do the same thing,,through a single shot,,couldnt get it too group well either,,like some was hotter than others?...........X

It certainly could be a chamber problem but is probably more likely to be a lot of brass that was not properly annealed after forming.

It looked to me like the one on the right, that got stuck, stretched a little more than the split case. Could it be headspace?

The gun is a Savage 93R17. I can also explain the odd looking casing, they are tarnished because of people handling them. I took them to some buddies houses and all that. But when they where fired they went in bright and came out bright so I don't think it is a chamber problem.

My Savage also splits cases part of the time. And if the chamber has one round fired since cleaning, if you leave a round in the chamber overnight the extractor will NOT remove it even if unfired.

Guys I just went through this problem with my CZ 452 17HMR got to looking at my hornady ammo and they were split before I ever fired them. Called Hornady and they sent ups to pick them up and sent me replacements. I had a 500 round box that only one box of 50 was open and out of 50 rounds 20 had split necks that was loaded and when looked through the plastic on the other boxes you could see split necks.
Hornady told me it was a old lot number. They said they have had some problems with older lots.

Didn't they have a recall on some of their ammo a while back? You might check that out. CCI makes all of the 17hmr ammo.

I've seen it in my savage also. I think they may have some quality control issues. Seems to be worse with certain boxes and fine with others. Its not like you are reloading the brass anyway.

The only thing that would bother me would be the stuck case.
