17 HMR Issue

I ran in to a problem awhile back with 2 boxes of the hornady v-max that would not fire. i did not think that i could have 2 boxes of bad ammo but it ended up that i did.

I picked up a box of the cci and had no other problem's if i where u i would get a differant brand and see how they do
just for the heck of it. I will say that i have went back to the hornady v-max since my savage 93r17 likes them better than cci and have'nt had any problems yet with about 225 rds thru her

let us know how it works out
good luck

That Guy,
Thank you for posting this about the Hornady 17HMR ammo. I just went thru a 50 rd. box I have and I found Five with split necks. Never would have know about it if it wasn't for this post. I would have shot them and never looked at the empty brass. I mean who does on rim fire ammo. I pick up all my centerfire brass cause I reload but just leave the rimfire stuff lay.
Brant308 do you know who you talked to at Hornady or a number you used. I'm going to tell them about it also. They need to send me a new box. Its only 50 round box but hey, they are not cheap.
EDIT..For the past 30 minutes I've been trying to take a clear macro pic of the rounds with the split and can't seem to get a clear one, but if I do I will post them.

Here are the pics I took of the five cartridges I found in my 50 box. Hope they come out clear enough for you to see the cracks.

I'm sure most of you guys know this but if some don't If you right click on each picture and then hit "save as" and put them in your picture file. Then when you go to the picture file and double click on them you can use that sliding arrow pointer to zoom in on them to see the cracks better.

Well been busy past couple of days, that is a whole other story. But went through the 200 or so rounds I had left of the matching ammo and i was surprised to find that like peterjc I had several unfired rounds with visible cracks in the neck of the case and 1 that was indented on the shoulder half way around. I think the grand total for defective rounds was 20 so that is surprising to me. I will be giving hornaday a call ASAP (as soon as I can break away from the hunny do list and the 1 year old) and see if the batch # i have is one they have as having the same problem. Thank you all for the help and by the way I had a box of CCI that cycled through the rifle flawlessly. I couldn't have figured this problem out with out all the guys on here that know more than stupid me.

Wait til I tell you my story. I called and talked to a guy in tech. division. Told him what I found and he said send my 50 rd box in UPS Ground to Hornady. So I package the box up real nice and drive 4 miles to a UPS store. They weigh it and check that is going to Grand Island Ne. and the girl says $10.85 to send it. I said what... I said hold off on that I'll get back to ya. So I take my box and stop at Gander Mtn. a new box exactly the same is $12.99 plus tax here in Pa. for total of $13.77 so I go home and call Hornady again. Get a different guy and tell him I talked to a guy named Todd and how he told me to send them in. I said you guys are not goin g to pay for my shipping so I don't see the advantage for me to send them. He took my name and address and said he will be sending me a new box and I didn't have to send the old one in.
Well I will let you know if I get them. Pete
