17 hmr or 22 mag?

going to buy a new rifle this year for fox. Definitely going to get a savage with the accu trigger. We can only shoot rimfire around here. Would you choose the 17 hmr or 22 mag?
 
I would prolly get the 22 mag. I have an HMR and love it but being able to shoot a 50 g. bullet has its advatages.
 
I'll second the 22mag. I've got both, shoot both often, but the 22mag has more punch at range. The hmr is tons of fun on small varmints, but for a dedicated fox gun a heavier bullet has the advantage.
 
I third the 22 mag. I talked to a guy the other day that shot a fox at about 20yrds with a .17hmr and after flopping around a few times he got up and ran away. They tracked him along way before he got into a hole. He is sure he put a good behind the shoulder shot on him. I think you need more punch than a .17 can effectively deliver.
 
I have a Savage 93 in 22 Mag. Great little rimfire. A 22 mag. would be a good choice with all the bullet weight choices to choose from.Good luck on your choice. Jack
 
.22 mag for fox. Also I would get the .22 cal for no other reason than it would prevent me from ever starting a .17 HMR thread. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
I know 2 people that has whacked yotes with the hmr and they have been in the 50 yard range and 1 was a shot to the eyeball ,DONE! The other guy shoots them in the neck,Done . I asked the one friend what do oyu shoot them with and he said CCI gamepoints 20grain , he said they mushroom instead of blowing up like v-max does.
 
I shot a coyote once with me HMR and he ran almost a half a mile before he went down luckly he had no where to go but the end of a water way. I hit hard in the dead center of the neck @ 30 yards. I will never use my HMR on a coyote again.
 
I shot a Yote with my HMR from about 15yds. Neck shot, dropped in his tracks, with a 20gr Gamepoint.

Having said that, I sold it and bought a Savage 22 Mag. Not looking back either.
 
22 mag, you couldnt give me another 17 hmr. The only thing I could ever kill was a black bird. Heck I doubt it would even kill a crow. It might kill something but it will run along way.
 
Thanks for the input. Picked up a 22 mag. I love it. I was going to get a new savage but the gun shop had a real clean used marlin 22 mag so I got it. Put a 2x7 scope on it with the left over money.
