Nice to see somebody ask for advice and then take the advice given, I'm impressed. Post some pics of the gun and groups.

Thanks for the input. Picked up a 22 mag. I love it. I was going to get a new savage but the gun shop had a real clean used marlin 22 mag so I got it. Put a 2x7 scope on it with the left over money.

Can't go wrong either way. I had a marlin 22 WMR semi auto. VERY accurate, but kept having ejection issues, so it went back for a savage bolt. Just as accurate but not as fun.

The sacrifices we make, huh? Nice choice.

Had the marlin 782 22 mag for a few weeks. Been trying different ammo each trip to the range. Shot some cci maxi-mag, hollow point, 40 grain today. They shot very well. 5 shot groups under an inch at 50 yards. That was just resting on a tackle box. I think in a lead sled it would put a lot of bullets through the same hole. Didn't get to try 100 yards because they were fixing the roof. I'm impressed. Foxes don't stand a chance this season.

22 mag or 17hrm will work fine! I just don't want to hear anything about the 5mm magnum crap!!! ~marco

Your the only one that mentioned the 5mm..

Why would you go out of your way to ruin a perfectly civil and informative thread?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Or I guess the bigger question is,,, how come you're such a Dick??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

whats the deal with the 5mm? I don't hear much about it but when I do its always bad.

There's not a thing wrong with the 5mm.
Truth is,, it was way ahead of it's time and never caught on..

Marko just has a cobb up his butt for the 5mm and never misses a chance (wheather real or percieved) to take a pot shot at it..

Do a search for the 5mm and you'll see where he pretty much insulted every single member of PM trying to get his dumb-azz point made..
I haven't forgotten it and never will...

Go over to Saubier.com and get some opinions from some pretty knowlegable guys and you'll see that it is what it is. It's not a 22WMR or a 17HMR. It's a 5mm mag. Hits harder than a 22mag and not as fast as a hmr...
CZ talked about making a rifle chambered in 5mm when they started making ammo for it again but unfortunatly that never came to be..
To bad,, because I would have liked to try one...

I'm gonna check out now and leave this one alone, since I'm sure Barko will be along soon with his crap and I'd probably get the boot if I got involved with him again..

The 17HMR,22Mag and the 5mm are basically the same thing. The bullets might be different calibers and one might shoot faster than another, but one of these calibers wont kill a small animal any deader than another. And most of the time a big animal like a coyote will run off after taking a hit with any of them and thats just the way it is.They werent made for shooting coyotes. It can be done but if you shoot a coyote with a rimfire and wound it its your fault not the calibers fault because it wasnt designed to do that kind of work in the first place.
So far I've killed 1,badger,2 armadillos,25 skunks,29 feral cats,20 porcupines, truck loads of starlings, prairie dogs jackrabbits and 1 coyote with the 17HMR and 1 armadillo,5 or so feral cats and about 20 skunks with the .22Mag and I can honestly say they were all DRT with both calibers except for a couple of jackrabbits.Maybe I got lucky I dont know but I do know that they will both kill critters deader than a doornail you just have to know what your doing. From what I've seen anyway but as you can see I havent killed a whole lot of critters with a .22Mag and thats just because I have a .17HMR and I like it better. My .22Mag is a pistol and its pretty loud so thats the main reason why.

I will eventually sell my Savage 17hmr and get a 22 mag. In my opinion it is better for the small predators like fox than the HMR. But, I will only use the 22 mag for hunting predators on public ground during deer/elk season.

For small predators and fur friendly hunting, I have been looking at the 221 Fireball. I do not own one yet, but would like to buy one and experiment with a reduced load that would shoot a 40g bullet at about 2900fps. I would think that the muzzle blast would not be much more than the 22 mag and it would pack more of a punch while still being kinder to the fur. I am thinking that a reduced load of fast burning powder would allow me to take the barrel length down to 20" without increasing the muzzle blast too much. The gun would handle much like the 22mag but be more lethal.
