You're right, but with a conversion of the FP it's possible. The extractor is the same way. It's a good start but you'll want a better rifle once you get the thing going, my advise is to convert a CZ or Ruger. In the begining it will cost you more but the long run you'll save a but load of pain, mental anguish, and hassle. Most smiths won't convert the Rossi (or HR's) due to the time involved. That's why they are a good home project, if you have the tools. Adam
 
A number of TC Contenders have been converted from 17 HMR to 17 AH. Ab's right, the Rossi would be worth that much less once done. The companies will probably all be coming out with them once the HH round comes along. May be a couple of years, but I remember 17 HMR ammo not being available for awhile too.
 
If it is a centerfire receiver, it will work, but it is probably a better idea to get rid of it and buy a 17 Hornady Hornet. Having said that, if TC does not make a 17 Hornady barrel, I will probably swap an extra .223 barrel for a 17 HMR barrel and have it rechambered to 17 Hornady Hornet. But the Contender frame is strong enough and is designed with a convertible firing pin.
 
17 hornet will be available in more factory guns soon I would imagine. I hope tikka or cz comes out with one. You must be able to get a TC barrel but you may have to get it from one of the other aftermarket barrel makers.
