.17 Hmr winchester misfires

Cabela's had the Winchesters on sale a few years back and I bought 500 rounds of it. My Savage absolutely hates them, or it knows they were on sale and hates me, so it refuses to fire a highly unacceptable percentage of them. However, I've had no problems with Hornady or CCI ammo.

I am beginning to wonder about the Winchester supreme 17 HMR 17 Gr. ammo I bought a couple of years ago. I was at the range last Monday sighting in my Savage that I put a new scope on. I had sighted it in with some Hornady and Federal ammo and was fine tuning it with the Winchester ammo since that is the ammo that shoots the best in this rifle. While doing this I had two rounds that sounded odd when I shot them, I even asked my wife who was spotting for me if the last two shots sounded odd to her and she said yes. The next shot that I took I could not hear any report or feel any recoil when I pulled the trigger, I thought OK just need to turn the cartridge a little and it will fire.

I opened the bolt and seen that there was no bullet in the case

I gently took it out and looked to see if the firing pin had hit properly, it had, tapped it on the bench and a chunk and a very few flakes of powder came out which was unburnt. I pulled the bolt and gave a quick look down the barrel but could see no light at the end of the barrel, bullet stuck in barrel

.. Took the cleaning rod and tapped the bullet out of the barrel

What was odd also is that I never heard the primer fire but it had and it had enough power to lodge the bullet into the barrel.

Now I know what happened last year on my Sage Rat hunt when the exact same thing happened with a round. The only thing different was I found out what happened when I could not chamber another round. Dang lucky that the bullet didn't get very far down the barrel where I could have chambered another round in behind it.

I finished firing the rest of the box and all sounded right and shot very well.

I have had other brands that have had duds now and then.

I will be very watchful now when using the 17 HMR no matter what brand of ammo I am shooting.

What a bummer! I had the same problem with Winchester Supreme ammo in my Savage last summer. On my last trip to the range I had 10 misfires out of a box of 50. I was so frustrated that I put the [beeep] gun in the cabinet when I got home and haven't touched it since. I'm probably just going move away from the 17 HMR all together.

I'm curious - are any of you shooting Marlins or CZ's having these issues?

Winchester has had problems with all rim fire ammo! I won't buy Winchester 22 magnum or 17HMR ammo anymore! With the WSM havent had any problems yet, but I don't shoot it very much. I do have a bunch of 22 magnum that was loaded in East Alton and it does great! All the new stuff is loaded in Mississippi and it crap!
