I'm not going to get into the debate about the .17HMR, but just wanted to point this out to peon, who apparently missed this bit of trivia!
Also the coyote was loosing a lot of hair on its tail. and the coat was loosing a fair amount also
Apparently this coyote had mange and was on its way to a slow death. So, when a coyote has mange, a lot of folks call it a "mangy coyote" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cougarbait. I took a pretty bad tounglashing myself a couple years ago when I took my 243 black bear hunting in Main. Not only did my buddies jump my case but the guide tried to get me to take one of his guns, a 30-06. Now this was not my first bear hunt here and after mangleing the fur on last years bear with the 45-70, I decided to put in the practice at the range and use a rifle I had a lot of confidence in. Range in Main is 60 yds. or less from the stands. So when the guide and a couple of buddies came to help drag my bear out, they couldn't find a entry wound. Then I told them to check the left ear. The bear dropped in it's tracks. No tracking here. Know your weapon and it's ballisticts. Know your target and it's anatomy. Heck, when I started huntin yotes I shot my first one with a 270 and had to track it 400 yds. to recover it. So I say great shot on that yote couger! kyray

Ahem, gentlemen, the Reverend Smartimus Popgun is now aspiring to his pulpit to speak the work of the lore. If you wilt all bow your heads and fold your hands whilst he pronounce the rightous proclaimation that only the chosen will follow: THOU SHALL NOT POINT YOUR .17 HMR AT ANYTHING YOU ENDEVOUR NOT TO CAUSE REPROACHFUL LONGSUFFERING AND VILE PAINFUL SORES FROM THE MUCH POSSIBLE IMPOTANCY OF A 17 GRAIN EXTREMELY FRAGILE POLYMER TIPPED DEMONIC BULLET THE SIZE OF A BB PELLET.
This concludes our service. Please place your offerings in the plate at the back of the isle as you leave. Thank you.

Does that mean if I hit a tree of something other than the critter I'm shooting at I could actually SHOOT MY EYE OUT!!!!!????? GASP!

You all are just way to quick to jump down someones throat. I have a HMR and have shot a few yotes with it. All shots were good. Recovered on and lost the other 2. Is it my choice for a coyote gun? NO! Will I pass up a shot because thats all I have ? Not if the range is close and i can make a good shot. But deffinatly not the gun I pick up to go calling coyotes. But I will use it for the little kitfox we have here. That being said, GOOD JOB ON THE KILL! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Mom warned me about those BB guns. No 17hmr for me boys. No sirree bob. Those things are dangerous.

I recently had an incident with a richochet from a 22 mag (CCI Maximag fmj). It can happen. Not likely with the 17hmr thought as this bullet explodes on contact. The 22 mag didn't. We have the bullet to prove it.

The guys show you a picture of coyote, expecting to get at least a nice responce. I would have gotten a little defensive too if I would have had 5-6 negative posts in a row...

Offering advice is one thing, but putting someone down while sharing a memory or picture is another. I've rolled a fox at 40 yards with a 20 guage shotgun, and shot several mink and fox with a 22lr. None of them limped off and died. I have shot a 17HMR, more than many here. I burned up close to 1000 rounds in 3 months alone-before most could get their guns.

It has killing power for a "close" coyote dead as hell-if you put that shot where it needs to go. I use a 22-250, but if offered a real decent shot at a coyote at a reasonable range, I wouldn't hesitate to put one right between it eyes with an HMR.

I shot my buffalo with a 22-250 last year. I was using 55 grain Trophy Bonded bear Claws. I asked the guide if I could shoot it with the 250, becuase I didn't want to ruin the meat. He asked if I could put one where he told me to. I nodded, he nodded, result =Dead Buffalo!

I had another rifle but I knew I would kill it dead as hell with the 22-250 and I turned it off like a switch. Was I irresponcible for taking that shot? I don't think so. Maybe you can ask the other 3 guys their opinions on it. It was a perfect situation for a terminal shot. The guide who usally backs us up didn't even get his 300 out of the truck.

You guys can all go back to my picture in the photo Gallery from last year and start jumping on me now if it makes you feel better. And you also had better tell Randy Watson not to jump on any more hogs and stab them in the heart either! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

boldasabear, greenhed, Christopher, IowaYoteMan, Cro-mag, Redfrog, R Buker, kyray Thank you for the congratulations.

The way the stand was set up the farthest that one could shoot safely was about 70 yards. I normaly carry a .223. But the area we were hunting in has a shooting restriction. So the .17 was a good choice . And most of the areas that we hunt the longest range on most stands is about 80 yards. Again thank you guys.

Big Meat, peon, J. Holly, do you guys even own a .17 hmr? Have you shot one? Don't be so quick to judge someone that you don't even know. I have a great deal of respect for coyotes. And all wild life as far as that goes. Boldasabear and I were hunting the same ranch one night right after I got the hmr and I passed up a 80 yard shot. I didn't feel good at the way the shot opertunity looked.
2 years ago on opening day of bear hunting I shot and killed a black bear with my 300 win mag. Unfortanatly I was unable to recover that bear. I still went hunting after that, but didn't shoot. I looked at it as my tag was all ready filled. And we are allowed 2 bear tags. I want the quick clean humane manner kill. I know my guns and how to shoot. I don't take slop shots. Every once in a whlie you will have a shot that dosen't go the way you want it. That is just the law of averages. I will not cripple a bunch of animals. I know my limmits and do not exceed them.

Well guys,

Now that we're starting to get this wore out, how about this. You can't hunt deer in Maine with the .17HMR but you can hunt one legally with the .22 mag. rimfire.

Hey, I don't make the rules, just share 'em. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hmmmm, now where did I see the regulations on slingshots? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Although I try and share the information I run across, that in no way indicates that I condone nor condemn such activities. Please don't flame the messenger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Boldasabear, your right I will try to get some more range time as soon as possible. I wasn't aware you are from Northern California. Here in the desert we shoot at fairly long ranges most of time 200-250 yard shots are common.

Since Oct 2003 to date, 94 yotes killed all with a .223 using 55 grain Vmax and Varget powder. One shot kills all. We will be going out again in the morning, contract with a local rancher. Seems he would rather have us do his coyote control than pay for an airplane at $80 an hour or a helo at $200 an hour. He quit using M-44 because he has ranch dogs and doesn't want them killed.

Anyhow, thanks for the advice, I will be practicing again in the morning.

John

I was tought too trust my weapon , and know it's capibilty. Make those shots count.!!! My 17 hmr loves killing fox, coyote, crows, pigeons, woodchucks, etc. It,s a great short range cal. Longer range I bust out my rem 700 .223 . Life is too short; shoot more shoot more often!!! BIG GUN , LITTLE GUN: HOW DEAD IS DEAD ???????????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
