17 Hornet ammo update

Not sure why this topc has elevated to cause such panic. I talked w Hornady today. You CAN reload the 17H brass by utilizing 2 simple steps:

1. Use a reamer to clean and reform the sides of the primer pocket
2. Use a primer pocket uniformer for the base

Once this is done, you should be to go. Non-believers feel free to contact Hornady to validate.

Don't see how it would be any different then the 1000's of rounds I've loaded of once fired crimped 5.56 brass, that can be easily swaged and if you want ream the primer pockets. Not rocket science, there are plenty of the tools out there to do it.

The problem is that the primer pocket is bad/loose. That is why it is crimped. The primers are coming out. You can swage or ream all you want and it will not tighten the primer pocket. That is not the reason the 5.56 is crimped. Hornady is not sure if the brass that was sold for reloading has the problem or not. I have 100 rounds of new brass and it may not be any good either. They will replace it if there are problems, if and when they ever get any. That is what I was told in the last email from them.

No....the problem as it was explained to me, was that the shoulders of the primer pocket narrowed in towards the flash hole. By reaming and uniforming, you allow the primer to be seated properly. Again, not going to get into a pissing match here. Just passing on what Hornady told me today. Feel free to contact them and get any questions answered

Guess they are giving different stories. I did contact them about it and it is my understanding the primer pockets were loose. I hope what you say is correct. That will be an easier fix.

So your all getting new brass then right? Hornady not making the brass...? Getting the run around answers from customer service..Wow I can smell a sell out company already.Giving the benefit of the doubt but Hornady lost some stock with me.

I don't know jack about smithing. But I have a cz varmint in .17 hornet. And was wondering if it could be made into a .17 fireball with out spending a ton of money. And just be done with the sorry son of a guns at hornady. BS on them.

Take care, Willie

Instead of sniveling why don't you guys just form some of your own brass from 22 hornet to get you by till this situation settles down.

Nobody is really snivleing are they. Also, I cant say I have seen any 22 Hornet brass for sale either so that isnt much of a solution. I am better off making the new brass I have and the ammo I have work. Not all of it had a problem.

Maybe its just my imagination..

Put up a post in the classifieds looking for a couple hundred rounds of hornet brass. Ask the guys over at Saubier. I bet you could get someone to help you out. Just cause you cant walk into a store and buy it doesnt mean your screwed.

Personally, overall I dont think their brass is all that good anyways. After forming a bunch of brass for my 17AH I think winchester brass is about as good as it gets for hornet brass. That isnt saying much but.. I've formed and shot a bunch of it and have less issues with it than anything else.

This is what I have been doing for awhile now with no problems.

Sir,

My self or anyone else on this forum should not feel obligated to give you or anyone else, a full blown scientific explanation. As to their thoughts and or reasons for questions that are asked. Nor do they need your approval to ask. It would probably be a good idea, if your intellect is so far above some of the questions being asked. That your brain should have a talk with your over active fingers to just shut your mouth and scroll by such trivial BS. As no one has a gun to your head forcing you to bless us with your wisdom. Or you can carry on. And soon there will be a hand full of ya telling each other how wonderful ya are, and how wonderful all of your chit is. Carry on!

No high intellect here... But my IQ is a couple points higher than that of a sizing die and a piece of 22 hornet brass. I didnt even stay at the Holiday Inn Express last night either, imagine that!

Where did I ask for a scientific explanation?

When did I say you needed my approval to ask?

"Shut your mouth" so forceful of you... You big stud you!

Your so wonderful Willie... Carry on man,

I have done exactly what has been recommended by Hornady and have had no issues with my reloaded ammo. I have noticed that some of the primer pockets have significant damage to them after depriming and have thrown those away. Many have required uniforming, in fact those that had fractured flash holes also were shallow and would have required extensive uniforming indicating that when loaded the primer and staking operation really drove the primer too hard into too shallow a pocket.
I continue to hope that Hornady is able to address these issues as the round has performed admirably on the critters I have shot.
I have communicated all of this to Hornady in hopes that they can fix the problems.

Does anyone know where I can find some ammo 20gr for the 17 hornet? There are a couple on gunbroker but exhaughting all ends before paying that price. Thanks for any help

I believe I seen some yesterday at the gun store but we have 10 boxes so didn't pay that much attention if they were for sure 20 if you want the phone number sure they would ship they wanted $22 a box.
