.17 hornet in CZ or Rugar

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and I have been reading for sometime and finally decided to join. I am fairly new to predator hunting, but have some good friends that have been showing me the ropes.

So I have been reading for the past two weeks every single thing I can find on the net about which caliber to use... obviously as we all know there is no perfect choice and everyone has their opinions. I have been hunting with the model 10 predator .22-250 for about two months now, and its very loud and not very fur friendly. So I have been trying to decide on a weather or not I want to save fur on foxes or want to make sure I can defiantly kill the coyotes, because we do hunt them both at the same time.
very hard decision for me since have changed my mind 50 times in the past week.

I have been leaning toward buying a .17 hornet since two of my hunting buddies have been having good luck with them and have killed 6-7 yotes with the .17 hornet so far. SO I think I am selling the .22-250 and going to give the .17 a try.

now the next decision is... Savage in a laminate stock (very pretty and accurate), the CZ (pretty much all around on accuracy, looks and action) or the ruger (best looking out of them all)

I know this has been discussed many times, and trust me I have read them all. But for the life of me I can't decide weather I should just stay with the .22-250, buy one of .17 hornets, or maybe something else. My head literally hurts... please help

Welcome to the forums!

I have a Savage Walking Varminter in .17HH. It's definitely accurate, easy to carry and carries enough oomph. However, selling one rifle to buy another would leave you one rifle short

If you can swing it keep the .22-250 and buy the .17.

As for Ruger, I have the Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor and the American in 7mm-08. Also accurate but I can't speak on one in the 17 or the CZ.

My head hurt from this same debate... But I wasn't considering selling 22-250 or other predator calibers I have. I was mainly looking for a factory caliber that was the best for Fox, debatable of course but I ended up going with 17 Hornet. My debate was CZ or Savage in 17 Hornet, couldn't get my hands on the Ruger. I now have the CZ and have no second thoughts. I felt it was overall a better gun and really liked the action and trigger. I didn't care for the Savage 25 action and I believe they have had some issues. I have since handled the Ruger and it is nice, would've picked it over Savage also. I still like the CZ.

Ruger: Best looking, worst trigger of the bunch. Would have to find a way to replace the trigger. If it came with the target trigger they have on their Hawkeye Predator or Target rifle it would be a no-brainer.

Savage 25: Stiff action and so friggen UGLY!!! Piss-poor resale value as well.

CZ: Decent looking, great trigger, and usually very accurate.

Well I went with the CZ and mounted a muller spot spot 4x16x50mm on top of it. very happy with how it turned out. Got all set up to shoot it in today, and realized I didn't have a cleaning rod that would fit down the barrel. So I guess I will wait till tomorrow when I can give it a good cleaning and then starting shooting.

I have decided to sell the .22-250 for now. I can't shoot much over 150 yards at any of my stands, and believe the hornet can handle whatever comes out at that distance. If I eventually feel that need for a bigger caliber at some point, I will buy another one.

Not crazy about the looks, but I feel after some hydro dipping, it will be freaking awesome

I too have been considering a .17 .
I think you made a good choice going with the CZ. I have one in .204 and also a .270.
Both have beautiful wood, are Very accurate and have great Triggers .
I'm considering the .17 fireball. .17 Hornet and I've been looking at the .17 wsm. I'm not overly thrilled with the reviews on the Savage or Ruger and
I wish CZ would offer their fine rifles in the latter caliber. As we have a rim fire rule for night hunting here and 90% of my shots are under 100 yards.

PaMitchH.... What Make & Model of CZ did You end up getting?I could see Hydro Dipping (Camo Pattern) a Kevlar Stock but not the nice looking Wood/Walnut Stock? My CZ Model 527 "Varmint" .204 has the Lighter Set Trigger where You push it forward and the pull is much lighter, pretty Cool Feature to have!
