17 Hornet vs 17 Fireball

I have two .17 FB's and they both shoot great......NOW! But they didn't start out that way. I ended up having to rechamber with zero freebore reamer and blue print both actions plus i did a trigger job on one. One is a 700 SPS Varmint and the other is a 700 custom with a Lilja barrel that started out as a MK4. It had a tight neck and chamber and i didn't want to deal with all the neck turning and two sets of dies so I had it rechambered with the same reamer i used on the SPS. Thank goodness one of my best huntin' buddys is a gunsmith, he helped me a ton. They now have a permenant place in my collection but it was a long and sometimes frustrating process. I wouldn't hesitate to own another one but it wouldn't be a factory gun, at least not a factory Remington. Maybe a Cooper! Hmmmm.....this could be expensive!

I'm really liking fwd to getting a Ruger in 17 HH. But my plan for it is in place of a 22-17HMR . Given sufficient accuracy. It should be great for around the house And for calling fox and lynx.

I have two Fireballs, a 700 SPS Varmint and a CZ527 Varmint that was rechambered. They both shoot 1/2" MOA.
I also have a Cooper 17 Rem, and I agree with an earlier post that it is awesome also and can be downloaded to equal the Fireball if necessary. I wanted a 17 Hornet, but could not figure where I would use it. In the Prairie dog fields, the Fireball is clearly better with the 25 VMAX. If the 17 Hornet is quieter, that would interest me. I even expermented with downloading the Fireball to 17 Hornet velocities. It was accurate, but I could tell no difference in noise levels. As far as Coyotes, I have taken 4 in the last month with the 17 Fireball at ranges from 50-225yds. All were DRT using the 30g bullets. For me, I think the 17 Fireball is awesome. I can take Prairie dogs out to 450 yds with the 25 VMAX, and smoke Coyotes to 250 with the 30g loads. One caliber covers all my varmint needs. Just my observations...

Exactly...duh!

LOL, I try to do a better job of calling... Actually, in the pastures I hunt you can't usually see them outside of 250 yds. The country is so flat in south Texas, not like out west where you can get up on a hill and see 500 yds.

I disagree. You can not find them around here in my parts of the state. They are gone as fast as they come in. Gun Gallery had 37 a few days before christmas. I was going to order the next day after work. The brown laminated stock ones. They was all sold by the next morning. I just think that if the FB and such had good advertising and made by other manufactures it might of took off. Like the 17 hmr, the 17 hh is here to stay. The void it will fill is a great fur friendly round for fox and bobcats at further ranges than 100 yrds and a tack driver. I think there are alot of us who do want one. Flat shooting,no recoil and great for a number of animals.

I think this new 17 super rimfire will go the way of the Fireball but not the 17Hornet. I think the 17 Hornet is going to do good. [beeep] its a Hornet!

If we all stuck with an acceptable rifle in an acceptable chambering all of the gun and ammo companies in this country would go broke!

Those guys have much of the shooting public convinced that a super positive ion cadmium chromed barrel with a laminated turtlewood stock shooting a 23.5 caliber bullet traveling at 5431 fps will kill anything that walks the face of the earth and will render 0.027 MOA accuracy.

Absurd you say? Haha, watch the gun ads.

You think they might neck that down to a 17 cal and get 6200 fps? Where do I buy it?

I think you should just own both and just have some fun shooting them. I think there is a 17 hornet in my future and I already have 4 other 17's from the hmr to the remington. I think they are all fun to shoot and depending on what you are doing they all have their pluses and minuses.

On forums like this you see new factory cartridges often being referred to as something entirely new to the shooting world.

For example, for years I have owned a wildcat 17 Mach IV of which the new 17 FB is a clone of. Depending on the reamer used, etc., brass made for one can and has been used in the other since the 17 FB was born.

Because the 17 M4 is a wildcat, some differences in reamers may exist in some instances since it has no SAAMI specs, so they are not totally interchangeable in all situations. But they are that close to each other in dimensions.

Nothing is really new.
