17000 acres of virgin land SW Florida need help:

I am so glad I found this site. I have been reading many of the posts and I can tell this is the forum I need to get the right information on coyote hunting.

I have never ever hunted predators but the situation at my hunting lease is forcing the issue. I am a member of a 17,000 acre lease near Labelle Florida. This is in the SW section of the state. Over the past 2 years we have noticed that our deer population has decreased. We also have seen many does with no fawns and many sows (wild pigs) with only 1 or 2 piglets. We have also heard and seen coyotes where we have never seen them before. Tracks are evident all over the lease. So we know we have plenty of them and we need to act now. Before the fawns start dropping in a month or so.

SO I need help. If any of you live in SW Florida within driving distance of Labelle which is 30 minutes east of Ft Myers and would like to hunt 17000 acres of never been hunted prime Florida land? shoot me an email artiflex@msn.com

I ordered a call. But if in my 52 years on this planet I have learned one thing. It is that the best way to learn something new is to watch and listen to someone with experience.

Sorry for the long post and thank you for this site.

[beeep]...I am in New York...road trip??? If I could offer you a bit of advice...take it or leave it. What if you were to have a predator tourney on your lease. Clear it with your club, and have a 3 day event. Pick someone from the site here to be your partner and show you the ropes. That way, you learn, and you will put a dent in the population all in one weekend. Just an idea. 17,000 acres is a big chunk.

The last time I had checked, electronic calls were illegal in Florida for hunting. From what I am understanding, the use of electronic calls can help out a great deal.

I will admit that I am in error. I checked the Florida fish and game website and discovered that you can use electronic calls for furbearers and wild hogs.

Members of the board. Don't laugh at this opportunity but this would make for a great family vacation. You could get a non resident license for I believe ten days for short money and then do some varmint hunting as well as the opportunity for the rest of the family to see the sights of Florida. My Dad and I like to go down to Florida for wild hogs. We hunt for a couple of days before we leave home to New England. At the start of the vacation my mother and my wife can enjoy the beaches, sights,et al and wrap it up with a good hunting trip.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was thinking about the idea of a tourney. But the land owner is a pain due to insurance and liability issues.

DO you need a hunting license to hunt coyotes? I know you dont need one to hunt hogs and do we have hogs plenty of hogs. You could come down do the calling we can shoot the dogs and you can shoot all the hogs you want.

I am telling yall this place as never been called. So as you can imagine it should be an excellent place to hunt by calling. Also with 17000 acres we wouldnt have to hunt the same stand twice.

We are 2.5 hours from Disney, 30 minutes to Ft Myers beach, 1 hour from Palm Beach, 20 minutes from Lake Okeechobee (big BASS) yeah it would be an excellent trip for you and entiire family. Plus we aint got no SNOW.

I bet the landowner would agree to a signed waiver. I suspect that such a document in the state of Florida would have greater weight to it. Also, every state that I know of has a blanket immunity when land is open without a fee.

This would be a great opportunity for varmint hunting in a unique location.

I'm in Tampa, sent you an e-mail....

I believe s tourney would make your problems eorse from educating coyotes. And 17000 acres aint really enough for many guys to not be running over the top of each other. Someone from your area will chime in. If not let me know after the first of the year. To really help your problem you need an experienced trapper. Just my .02

I don't know...17,000 acres is a lot of space from what I'm used to....Are you sure that it's not some of the Boas that are cleaning out some of the wildlife.???

The wife and I will be back down there from Dec thru Apr and I'll be getting in touch with you...We'll be up in the Cocoa area so it's only about 4 hours down to your area...

I'll bet you could have a lot of fun shooting coyotes if it hasn't been hunted. That's a lot of land. A couple hundred acres around here is a lot these days. My brother lives down in Melbourne for the last fifteen years or so. He used to hunt a lot too, even going on trips in Northern Canada and other places for caribou. He still has all of his guns, but doesn't hunt. If I lived there I would jump at a chance to hunt a piece of land like that. I'm sure that you will find a few members on here that will take you up on it and get a vacation in the bargain. It sounds like something is really ravaging the deer population there. I hope you get something worked out.

Your "experienced trapper" would have to use cage traps if he hoped to try for coyotes in Florida. Steel leghold traps are illegal, to put it in the state's words: "Anywhere wildlife is found" in Florida.
Cage traps have been tried down here without much success.
Night shooting with "artificial lights" is also completely illegal in Florida.
So, the coyotes pretty much rule the roost down here.

I dont possess an "experienced trapper" and am not aware of all florida laws but there are other methods of trapping such as snares and foot snares that may be able to be used.

Cage trapping coyotes is a very low success rate option to begin with. Here in Massachusetts we have severe trapping restrictions and the only option for coyote is a cage. I believe only a handful have been caught in the last decade.

I sure will be glad when the original poster comes back and tells us if anything has happened on that property yet. I don't live too far from there and I'm all ears!

gator4ever,
I get down to the Bradenton area at least three times per year. I would love to get in a day afield with you if time permits. We may not dent the population, but we will have fun. Thanks.
