.17Rem. .........coyote gun or coyote club?

I have 4 17 Remingtons and have not shot a lot of coyotes with them, but every one I shot was in fact DRT>

I've only had my .17 Rem for a year but love it. Shot 12 coyotes with it last year but didn't get a chance at a cat. All the coyotes were runners but none went farther than 50 yards and dropped. No exit wounds. I love shooting the gun. It is just fun to shoot.

Dave, my friend,

The hunting season isn't too far away. Get that new rifle all tuned in so we can make some coyotes fall down. John got all the trigger work last time we hunted.

I have not used the 17 rem. but have had clients that have. They have since moved on to larger stuff, like the Swift or the 22.250.

I hear of guys making shots beyond the 300yds. there are often those opportunities in areas I hunt. How much drop do you have at 4, 5, or 600 yds.? and how do you compenste for drop, with scope adjustments or Kaintuck windage?
How much energy is that 30gr. pill packing at those ranges?
I could look at ballistics charts, but some of you reload and your mileage may differ. Besides if I relied on the charts, then I wouldn't be shooting coyotes at 500 yds with the 17 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I missed the original point. 300 to 600 yards (just my opinion) you need something a bit more potent. I was giving my opinion of calling ranges. 100 yards is a long shot when calling here. 3-600 yards you'd be better suited for a big 22 cal to a 6 or 6.5mm. I have never pulled the trigger on a coyote over 150 yards so I have nothing to offer here.
 
If I had to shoot Coyotes at 300- 600 yds.. I probably wouldnt try to use a .17 Rem.. Id probably use my 7MM. or........

I've shot a few coyotes at 300+... all "targets of opportunity" from the bedroom window. In my experience, the ol' 22-250 still does just dandy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Never have shot one that far out when calling... can't help but let them come in a little closer. But it does warm my heart when that yote locks up DRT from a long way away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Having never used one or even shot one, the only problem I see with the .17's is if one does take off running, that bullet makes just a tiny little hole going in and it usually doesn't exit (according to most accounts). So, no (or very little) blood trail... that's the only concern I'd have with the .17's. But used within their limitations, I've read enough accounts to have confidence in it's killing ability... but I'd question whether or not I'd want to "reach out and touch one" with it like you can with the 22-250/220 Swift/.243.

This was not a 17 Rem though it was a HMR I know that is too much gun for such a small pig but it was all we had.

My 17 Rem LVSF does an adequate job, I havent lost one but most of them run a little way or do the death spin for several seconds. I have not had any bullets exit and that makes the skinning job much more pleasant.
I did move up to a 204 Ruger last season due to the runners and can say from my experience that they dont run off when you put that little 204 bullet in the boiler room, maybe a few spins but most are "bang,flop".
Just my 2 cents worth.
 
I've been thinking hard about getting a .17 Rem. Fireball for fox and yotes inside 200 yards. Would a .204 be a better pick or the Swift? I'm not sure what they would do to a fox hide as I have no experience with them. I am really going in circles on this so any input is appreciated.
 
On the fox, it is all about bullet design and placement.

The worst I ever saw a fox torn up was with a 17 rem. Facing in shot and the bullet hit off center in the chest. took the whole side out of the fox including his shoulder. I shot a fox last year with my swift using a 53 SMK at 10 feet from me. Rib caged both sides. A red dot where it entered and about dime sized on exit. Skint that one for the fur.
 
30 gr Hammlet at 3960FPS turns the 17 in to a different rifle at longer ranges.
Better BC,more energy and holds energy long where the 25gr starts sheddig speed in a hurry.
Anyone with doubts should call Kevin Rayhill the gun builder/savage stock maker and ask him about the 30's and buy some off of him.
Him kills coyotes at and over 600 yds on a regular basis with the 17.
