17WSM: WILL IT BE AROUND 10 YEARS FROM NOW?

For the lack of interest, I guess, gun manufacturers seem to have little or no interest in chambering new guns for the 17WSM.

Do you think this round is here to stay or in 10 years or so it will become obsolete like many others have?

Not sure. I love the round. But it seems like the local gun shops I frequent a lot, the ammo just sits on the shelves and doesn't move much. I wish there were more options in rifles for this round.

I think it will hang in there. All through the panic the ammo was there as opposed to no 22 Mag. The one that surprised me is the MACH II still being around.

The auto is so popular that if they could get the cost down I bet it would sell well.

In ten years there will probably be a handful more of 17 whiz bang calibers. Who can tell for sure? I prefer to stick with the tried and true calibers that have been around forever and continue to stick around.

Not many have jumped on board and chamber a gun in 17 Hornady Hornet, either, but that cartridge seems to be holding its own.

I still have a couple HMR's but if it weren't for the fact I have almost 8 thousand rounds of HMR ammo, I doubt I'd still own an HMR because my WSM does everything the HMR can do, just better.

Personally, I think a 20 WSM shooting the Hornady 24gr NTX bullet around 3000fps would have been much more popular and filled a gap, better, between the rimfire and small caliber centerfire rifles. The 17 HMR has become such a popular rimfire that, IMO, they would have been better off going to a 20 WSM instead of the 17 WSM so it could/would seperate itself, further, from the 17 HMR. Then when CCI came out with their A17 ammo, oh boy, that really confused a bunch of people. I've been in gun shops on multiple occasions when the counter person was explaining to a customer that the 17 WSM was a completely different cartridge and that the A17 was just a faster shooting 17 HMR ammo.

I am a big fan of the HMR and have 3 of them here at the house, it was my go to gun for sage rats until I fired a WSM. I have now just purchased my second one as a back-up to my Volquartsen IF-5. The new one is a B Mag with a heavy fluted barrel and a laminate stock. I just got a Vortex 6-24x50 Crossfire II mounted on it today and will be sighting it in ASAP. I feel real good about this B Mag and I am sure that this round will take off just as the HMR did. GREAT ROUND!

Did you mean cartridges?

My 17 WSM started life as a heavy barrel SS Bmag. I bought mine before they ever had the laminated stock versions so it came with the POS plastic stock but I had a Boyds Pro Varmint to put it in the very next day. I had my action bed in the new stock, not the barrel like in cavedwellers youtube video, and cut the barrel back to 20in. then threaded to run suppressed. I chronographed it since cutting a couple inches off and it avg. 2984 FPS and shoots very well. My trigger didn't adjust down as low as some are able to get theirs down to so I took my trigger apart and tuned it up. It now breaks crisp under 2 lbs.

I was curious if the wsm is safe with a rimfire can. I was messing around with a buddy's Franklin Armory which was threaded but I didn't use my rimfire can because I couldn't determine if it was rated for that big of a round or not. It's fine on the hmr.

Don't wander off in the dark all butt-hurt now. There are actually two 17 calibers: .177 for air rifles and .172 for rifle cartridges with a number of different .172 rifle cartridges available.

Make that three of us, then. They may have been intimidated by
Remington's lack of success with their 5mm mag, though.

I believe a properly marketed 20 cal with a 35 gr poly tip bullet could do well. However, it would need to be put in the proper platform. A Ruger American in 20 cal rimfire would likely do marvelously. Just my opinion.

Should've made it a .20 cal.; could have been what the 5mm Remington never was.
With ever-shrinking areas to hunt, a hard-hitting, tack-driving .20 rimfire would be more than welcome in my varmint arsenal. But an inaccurate 17? No way.
They dropped the ball on a golden opportunity, imo.

The 17WSM is a nice little cartridge with a lot of performance for its size. The new 15 grain offering should be a winner at 3300 fps. It would help if other manufacturers would produce ammo other than Winchester.

I would like to see a CZ or Anschutz in 17WSM. Most other manufacturers will not touch this cartridge because they would need to design a whole new action around it being that chamber pressure is 30K.

It is a fun little cartridge and for volume shooting, nothing compares to a rimfire and the 17 WSM definitely packs the most punch of all the rimfires that is for sure.

But I really think they missed the boat because like I said earlier, a 20 WSM shooting that 24gr NTX alloy bullet right around 3000fps would have created a lot less confusion between the 17's and would have carved out its one little niche.

Federal and hornady are producing ammo for 17wsm.

The label on the box and the case headstamp is all that's different, Winchester makes all of the 17 WSM ammo, regardless of what the box says on it.
