19-223 Calhoon?

Anyone shoot one of these?

I am going to build my first AR soon, just getting parts together. So, I figure I'll have a 223 for the coyotes, so I think I might convert my Ruger over to 19-223. Doesn't seem too costly. I think it might be a good varmint/coyote caliber.

Any other thoughts or opinions??

You bet!

I have a Cooper Classic in 19-223. It is two years old and I love it. It has killed hundreds of PD's and is a great caliber. Forming brass is easy with the Forster dies from Calhoon. The 36 gr. bullet is working best for me.

Its a lot like the TAC20 but yet different.

My only concern would be bullet availibility. Not having ever had one I am assuming you can get bullets from only Calhoun ??

Calhoon only! Unless you get set up to make your own.

I've got 5000 19 Caliber bullets on the shelf. The barrel will be shot out when I get those used up.

That is my plan, buy enough pills to keep that baby heavily medicated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif That is, until that barrel is "cured"-- shot out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If you are concerned about bullet availability Corbin makes a Swager to swage 20 cal bullets down to 19 cal. The only thing you will miss is the silver coating.

I seen Jim last summer and he looked very healthy to me and I don't think he will be closing or selling the business anytime soon.

Best wishes, bill

I've had one for 4 years now. It's a fine caliber and wreaks havoc on the pdogs. The bullets are a little to explosive for coyotes IMHO as they are double hollow points designed to explode on impact. Jim was going to build me a few "test" bullets with heavier jackets for coyote hunting but he's so darn busy that he's not had the time to do so.

It's my main pdog gun and extremely accurate. I highly recommend the caliber. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hey Mike,

I guess I'll just use the AR for yotes, and keep the 19-223 for the other varmints.

What brand action did you have yours built on?

I have a Ruger M77 Mk II All-Weather in 223 that I want to use. It is a very accurate rifle as it is, I can only imagine that it would only get better after the conversion.

Anyone know anything about swaging your own bullets for the 19 out of 20 cal. bullets? Will you lose the copper jacket on a bullet like the V-Max or similar bullet? Or does it just squish it down a little bit?
