Dead Down Wind

Well-known member
Hunting partner and I went out this morning to sight in rifles for the upcoming season.

I sighted in 5 rifles, 3 night setups,
Bergara Ridgeback 6mm Creedmoor with ATN Thor 5xd, Wyndham Weaponry .223 with Infyray Rico 60mm and Seekins Havekpro 6mm Creedmoor with a N-Vison XRF and my day setups were Christiansen MPR 6mm Creedmoor with Nightforce and a Bergara HMR 6mm Creedmoor with a Nightforce.

Wind was blowing a consistent 13mph from the South and we were shooting due East as we had targets along a 2-track where we could check with the ATV.

Shot out of 400yards and a couple rounds at 500 with day setups and only 100 yards with the night setups.

After we loaded up the truck and started heading back to Denver I told my partner we need to scout out the new property we just got which is around 47,000 acres, the husband was at their other ranch 1 1/2 hours away which is around 47,000 acres as well.

We stopped by the owners house and spoke with his wife for about 20 minutes and then headed out to the areas where she said she is seeing the Coyotes. *She said that she saw 2 coyotes just down the road from her house this morning.

We drove around slowly for about an hour maybe less and ended up seeing 6 different coyotes, it was 86 degrees and around 5pm.

You never see a coyote during the day when it is 86 degrees.

We now know where to start hunting on the 17th of October.

It’s not too often I see coyotes out and about in the heat, but I do see them. I’ve seen them out in 90 degree weather in the afternoon. Odd…..but I do see them occasionally when it’s 🥵.

Have fun on that 47,000 acre piece.

2x47 =94,000 acres;-)
Not arguing with ya. What I meant was……have fun on THAT 47,000 acre piece, I read that ya have access to 2 different ranches (same owner) at both being 47,000 acres. (I can add😉). An hour and a half away between ranches (in my mind) is 2 separate pieces.
No matter how ya slice it…HAVE FUN! That’s a TON of land and you’ll kill coyotes.
