1x4 calling scope

Thanks Kevin!
If it weren't for the Egg Shoot, that scope would've been on the AR in AZ. I can hit soup cans & bowling pins with it @ 200yds, but an egg is stretching the issue...

Funny how half the coyotes encountered out there were in "shotgun range" so I don't think a 4x or 5x max setting is a limiting factor at all on a calling gun at all...

If you had an urge to shoot farther, you can extrapolate your load's drop data onto the SPR reticle easily enough.
SPR.gif

The point at which the circle intersects the bottom vertical axis is 5 mils and there is a 2.5 mil hash in between.
The values are not really necessary for coyote hunting, but it's fun to know your reticle & experiment at the range...

Yea Dave bet those boys working on your rifle were target shooters or big game hunters too!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd be thinking big scopes if I lived in the wide open spaces, but I don't.

90 percent of my shots are under 100 yards, don't need a 50mm 14x scope. Only cranked my scope above 6, half dozen times in the last 10 years.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

"yeah" dogboy your right..the boy's behind the counter are alway's talking about..reaching out & touching thing's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifi really wonder what most guy's are thinking ..reach out & touch what..a target..maybe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gifreal life hunting is tough /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Knockemdown, nice reticle there... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif When you come to Globe for the 09 hunt bring that bad boy with you.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Dave ya think...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Most other hunters can be humbled real quick about their smokepoles and optics, when it comes to coyote hunting.

They would get stressed real fast shooting in some of my country that is open and expecting a long shot, then the next thing they know the coyote is 20 yards from them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

yeah..i'm with ya..i know there are memeber's here that hunt flatter..more..open terrain..than i do..yet hunting the high desert here in southern idaho..sometime's when i'm in a stand i find myself gazing @ mountain ridge so far away it's in another state..then a coyote pop's up @ 20-30 yard's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Man, you guys have really covered some topics since I last logged on last night. Seems that lower powered scopes are more popular than I thought too.

My thoughts were to just give you one more option to think about. I was referring to having a T.K. Lee dot installed, of whatever size you might find useful. It cost $65, plus $10 shipping and insurance, for a total of $75. The duplex is replaced with a thin crosshair and dot. The company has been in business for many years.

Presently I have a fixed Leupold 12X at the company right now for dot installation. That one will be for groundhog hunting. But, I have this Leupold 3X that I mentioned that has been on my mind for some time to have a dot installed. I just haven't got around to doing it.

I personally like a dot reticle. Now that I have used one, (I have dots in two different scopes) it's hard to think about going back to a standard crosshair. But, maybe that's just me.

As to washing out in subdued light, I really can't say about the T.K. Lee dot, but I can say that the Mueller 3x10x44 illuminated dot does a fine job, even without the light (dot) turned on. I can call in some pretty subdued light with that one before I have to turn it on.

I shot a running coyote last season using the Mueller and a Dtech 6x45. The coyote was going away from me in a hurry and at an angle, at a little under 100 yards. I had to shoot quick before he got behind some overhanging tree branches. That dot reticle really helped me get on it in a hurry and I dumped him just as he was beginning to get near the branches. I have told several people that I honestly believe I could not have done it with a standard duplex reticle.

One other thing to consider is that a second dot can be installed on the verticle wire ($20 additional cost) just in case you might be inclined to shoot at a greater distance. The company can place the dot wherever you want it, such as to take advantage of your rifle's specific trajectory. You may not need or want it, but it's nice to know the service is available.

Dave, I'm not trying to sell you on a dot reticle, just merely offering that bit of information just to give you some more options to think about.

As to the Leupold 1x4 itself, I'd say you have got one heck of a good one. Whatever works, works.

Good hunting to you.

2MG...that's too bad i would have bought it off ya!! BTW i tried to send ya a p.m. after reviewing the shooting bag link you sent me.."however" it didn't go thru..the message said that i'd exceeded my quota ??

i'm not sure how i've exceeded my quota ?? i tried again to send you a p.m. as i tried a few time's yesterday /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif i guess i'm cut off /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif..2MG..it was a split second decision on my behalf..sorry buddy..i had no idea you had one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

i went with the bushnell 4200 1.25x4x29 with red dot illuminated rectical. it was about the same price as the leapold but i think it has better glass ans the red dot for when you need it. the leapold had nice glass but not as nice as the 4200 and the 4200 has rain guard and the illuminated red dot with 13 different settings. its a very nice scope. thanks lee

No big deal, Dave. I would have probably sold it to you, but I'm not dying to get rid of it anyway. Hope you like your new Leupold, they are nice.......

i forgot to say..i did run out to the range this morning..i was short on time..so i just sighted in @50 yard's for now.."WOW"..this scope is clear..the field..of..view..is tremendous

Dave ............. I just dial my 1.5 x 6 up from the bottom until the barrel goes away in the sight picture. Usually about 2.5 power, but that can vary depending on scope height and barrel length. Hunts real well right there.

Welcome to the club.

I was picking up my .223 from the Sportsman Club the other day, asking what kind of pricing they get for scopes. They asked what I wanted, I have been interested in these 1X4 and 2.5X8's. Someone else that was there piped up, said you have to have something higher power for a varmint rifle. I didn't say anything, just went on about my business. I guess they didn't look outside and see we are in Missouri, with lots of woods and hills. Just can't figure it out!

+1 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif i've grown tired of also being sold on high powered optic's..by some dude who..if..he..came clean has probably never called a coyote /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Actually the guy at the gun store was right. You DO need something high powered for a "Varmint" rifle.

Now a "Predator" rifle is a whole different story.
And Dave's shiney new 1-4 Gold Ring is just the ticket for one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

RePete..as normal..you are correct /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifi think where fella's get confused..is the fact that mixing..shooting varmint's..v/s.."calling" predator's..become's confusing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gifIMHO it's two different ball game's..
