2 3/4" slugs out of 3 1/2" chamber??

Im looking to get me a new shotgun. Im looking at the 11-87 super mag turkey gun. I like the price and experience that Ive had with the 11-87 but im not sure about the 3 1/2" chamber... I doubt id ever shoot 3 1/2" shells but cant get the gun in a 3"..

With that said, I have a VERY large supply of 2 3/4" rifled slugs and love shooting them out to about 100 yards. Ive heard that accuracy can seriously suffer when shooting shorter slugs out of a longer chamber but I am curious if anyone here has any REAL WORLD experience.

What say you?


P.s. Hopefully dpms will fix some stuff for me soon and ill have a 308 upper up for trade for a semi auto shotty. (just in case anyone out there may have one!)
 
I have an 870 super mag and just ran some 2 3/4 Remington sluggers through it after remounting the scope. The barrel is a factory cantilever mount rem choke barrel chambered up to 3 1/2". Grouped about 3 1/2" to 4" at 100 yards. With Remington Buckhammers I can get down to 2" pretty consistently. If your planning on using it for deer either one will do a good job.
 
i have a 11-87 supermag,i shoot 2 3/4 slugs with no problems
i like lightfields and copper solids the best.ive try many other and none shoot to well.with the lightfields and copper solids it will easy shoot 3in or less at 100yds
 
I've shot 2 3/4" slugs out of a Rem 1100 3" competition with chokes and my Winchester 1300(3") with choke and had no problems... I've just never owned a 3.5" chambered shotgun...but I doubt that it should cause any problem with them either..

The more and more info I read the more mixed reviews im gettin on the 11-87. My dad owned one that was great and I loved to shoot it.. the gas system took some of the oomph out of the slugs. His never jammed on me..

Many are suggesting the Benelli but I cant find one that has rifle sights in a turkey (coyote) configuration like the 11-87 turkey..

Dang decisions...

i did have a cycling problem,a while back.sent it to a factory service center,they fixed it free of charge,not a single problem since.
over all i like the gun
its not a turkey model,it the 1 Dicks sporting goods sells,if theres any in your area,when they put them on sale its hard to beat there price
i have a rifled slug barrel for it so i have no clue what choke to tell you to use.i belive they have a rifled choke tube.

My research has led me to the 930... I think that thats probably the one ill end up with. I dont really need the camo but thats the only way that set up comes from remington and i like the idea of saving a few bucks to find a good choke for it.
 
I use a 11-87 special purpose w/cantilever mounted scope on it. I use the Hornady slugs and have had no problems regarding accuracy with it. Honestly if I were buying a shotgun again, I probably would not buy the 11-87. I had some cycling problems with it for a few years (read 2 deer seasons) with it. I finally replaced some parts and it did better. Seems like it shot better after I had put a few hundred rounds through it. Almost like it needed loosened up a bit. The reason I bought it was because I loved my Dad's 1100. That being said, in my opinion the 11-87 is not as good of a gun. Dont get me wrong, I am not getting rid of it and am pleased pretty well. I just thought it wasnt made as well as what I expected. If I were buying another one, it would be a benelli.

If I could find a benelli in the setup I want I would jump on it... They just dont make one like I want and I dont want to have to put $ into it to get it like I want it...

Im starting to REALLY like the 930 Turkey model.... Shes a dog but supposed to function great!

for me the hornady slugs were the worst ive tried,but i dont think ive got got a 100 slugs down it,but with all ive tried gotta be close.

no problem,wonder why they dont shot out of mine very well,i think i may switch to coppersolids,can get them a sale for under 10 bucks.the lightfields are getting to expensive at 15 an box.
 
Bobeano, Mine does well the SST in the factory cantilever barrel. Have you thought about the new remmingtons with the green tips? (Think they are supposed to be making them in 3" too). They look pretty neat but have been so happy with the SST that cant talk myself into it. Have a guy I hunt with that has an 1100 with a Hastens barrel on it that doesn like the SST either. Guess thats why guns are like people, all of them different. Good luck.
