2 3/4 shotgun shells for predators.

I have a model 1897 winchester that was my great granddads that is still in very good working order. I have used it in the past to turkey hunt, but was thinking it would be neat to take it coyote hunting an try and put another notch on the stock with a coyote.
thing is it is only chambered in 2 3/4, good thing is that it has a full choke barrel. what would you guys think I should use for ammo. Any thoughts whould be great!

dead coyote comes in 2 3/4 or BUCK does to either of these would be great. I wish I could use 4 BUCK it is ILLEGAL IN KY.

I'd use the 2 3/4 #4 buck keeping your shots at 40 yards or under should be no problem taking a coyote.

Just be prepared to put a second load on the target if it even looks like it wants to get back up and run. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Really bb or smaller? I did not know that.

OK...it's time to read the instructions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Don't be out there if you aren't legal. I know....soemtimes it's hard to understand all of the rules and the way they are worded. But if in doubt, CALL them and ask specific questions. That's why they are there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Like what was said, #4 Buck will do you well. I have shot yotes with BB as well but that was at very close range. and it ran a ways before it dropped

Federal Premium 2-3/4" 1-1/2 oz of copper coated lead BB's are a very good 2-3/4" coyote load.

This is what I would be using in that old barrel, plated lead BB's. Pattern it with a few shots to make sure it hits to point of aim and patterns ok. Keep the range moderate and don't press the gun/load into something it can't do well, you should be fine. I used 2 3/4" BB's for several years through an old Browning A5 and an early Remington M870, both with modified barrels. They'll kill within decent range. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

#4 Buck, but only close up.
Here are some links, but do a search, too.
Lots of good info out there.

Jeepers, I'm glad I checked this out....I don't recall allowing you to use my shotgun for this test! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ... I saw the picture and said "Hey!, there she is!"... I had roughly the same results as you(at about 30 yds)with #4 buck(Federal 2&3/4 "magnum" w/34 pellets) and a "Dead Coyote" choke, low and to the left. I tried compensating high and to the right, but then it hit high and to the right... I need to do more testing but methinks it was me causing the inconsistency...I just may have to get a red dot for the ol' girl, 'cause she shoulders too sweetly for me to even think about getting rid of her...my "go to gal" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Went looking for 2 3/4 inch shells yesterday in Reno, neither Cabelas or Sportsmans Warehouse had any. Where can I find some 2 3/4 #4 buck in 12 guage? I'm not willing to pay hevishots prices, I want lead.

.....4 buck will put them down real hard but if you don't want alot of bleeding and a smaller hole use BB. a friend of mine is a gov. trapper and does alot of flying for dogs and all they used to use was BB. they now use 4 buck because that is what they can get. both loads will do the job nicely......walli

Jacob,
One thing I was going to mention in my post above, I would NOT use any Hevi-Shot type loads through that older shotgun barrel. Hevi-Shot generally needs a barrel capable of handling steel shot and your old shotgun certainly isn't good for that type super hard shot. I would use plated lead shot only.

The 2 3/4 will have more velocity and that can be a plus if you are worried about pellet numbers.

My first shotgunned coyote fell to a 20 ga with # 6 shot in the chest at 25 yds. Yeah I know,..big deal.
