20" barrel for a .270?

Hello, I'm in the process of building a mountain rifle and I came across a used douglas barrel that certainly fits the bill, its a light contour and is 20 inches long

But I was wondering if the 20 inches might be too short,,,I know many gun makers have switched to 22 inch barrels,,,,but is it too short to really take advantage of the caliber??

I was wondering if someone could give me some info or numbers on what I would be loosing or some pros and cons on the 20 inch barrel for a 270,,,,,,thanks for your time!!

Man that would be painfully loud to shoot. It would work, and the animals would never know the difference between 20 and 22 inches.

I have a model 70, 270 Winchester that was cut down to 18 inches. My son uses it and I use the same but, with a 22 inch barrel. It doesnt seen overly loud nor does it drop much more that mine. The short barrel is more accurate than mine(Darn).

Thanks guys, basically I'm looking to make a light weight rifle on a savage 110, long action, I know, maybe not the best choice for a lightweight but thats what I have so thats what I'm using,

The rifle is chambered in 30-06,,,,,shoots well but the barreled action comes in at 4.5lbs,,,,,sooooo, I was looking to lighten it up with a lighter barrel, the barrel in question is a used douglas,,,,,,I don't know how well it shoots though,,,,,,,,thanks anyother comments, Does anyone know of any ballistic calculators that put barrel length into the calculations?????

Youngtrout,
I have a Feburary 1993 Shooting Times magazine with velocities of the 270 Winchester with different length barrels. The 20 inch barreled rifle is a Ruger ultra lite, for a 22 inch barrel they used a Remington 700 or a Winchester 70. 130 grain Nosler ballistic tip/ 60 grains of H4831 runs 3016 fps through the 22" m70 and 2949 fps in the 20 inch Ruger. (Not to shabby huh) 150 grain Speer sbt/ 58 grains of H4831 runs 2906 fps through the 22" M700 and 2811 fps in the 20" Ruger. 140 grain Sierra sbt / 57 grains AA3100 runs 2908 fps through the 22" m70 and 2822 in the 20" Ruger. I dont recommend that anyone try to use these loads they are here for ballistic comparison only.

I think with the right powder choice in a reload you will only lose 40 - 60 fps with 130 gr bullets maybe less with 140 and 150gr . I say go for it, it is not a light weight with a long barrel.

sounds good! I have a antelope trip in oct. but after that the 06 barrel is coming off, and we'll see how the .270 preforms,,,,,by that time I hope to have a crono also

I ran into a nice guy at the range yesterday shooting a bolt action single shot pistol in 270. If he had a 20" barrel I'd be surprised. I thought it'd be really loud but it wasn't that bad.

He was trying out reduced recoil shells from some manufacturer and was surprised that it shot significantly higher with those rounds, as compared to standard 270 rounds.

I agree you'll probably loose some efficiency from the short barrel but it's still going plenty fast.
