$20 Ebay Head Light Follow Up Question

I read the 31 page LED Hunting light thread and had a few questions. It only took me a couple of hours to read that thread. I thought I would just start a new topic since I had gotten so confused during the original thread.

There are a lot of the "$20 Head Lights" options on Ebay. It appears that the ones with the smooth finish on the body of the light are the better lights. I have not been able to find one of these for sure to buy knowing that it is the correct light. This is as close as I could find, but not sure about the picture.

I plan on buying a couple of the lights as I needed a white LED light last night to sew up a puppy dog. It would have been a lot better than Chevrolet Head Lights.

As far as a scanning light goes, would this light be better since it has a higher lumen output and therefore you should get more light through a red filter?

Don't believe the lumen claims, they are bogus. Lux is the measurement you need and no one gives it. This link explains it. By sliding the head on the headlamp you do nothing to the lumen output but focusing it changes the lux measurement.

Here's what I bought, the add shows 2 different models now so not sure what you'll get.

The last ebay light that Vetman listed has an XP-G LED, which is a bigger die size LED than the XR-E or XP-E LED that are in the $20 headlamp. The XP-G can be driven harder (more amps and faster battery usage)to produce more lumens (although the 600 lumen claim might really be closer to 250 to 350 actual lumens). Since the XP-G has a larger die size, it will not throw as far as the XR-E or XP-E.
That XP-G headlamp will likely have a better flood beam. And it might keep your forehead a little warmer while that XP-G is consuming the battery juice about twice as fast as the $20 headlamps!

and if you use it continuously for 6 months, and at the same time keep a cell phone glued to your ear to allow the microwaves to infiltrate inside your head, eventually you will grow a glow in the dark 3rd eye and will have no further need for the light.

The ebay light pmack gave a link to is the same one I bought recently. It came in as the "new style" with the wavy light housing however there was no slop in the zoom movement and the light works flawlessly, knock on wood. It shipped in about 5 days so you dont have to wait for it to come from Hong Kong. It really is a great light.

I got this one from Amazon a month ago. Just felt more comfortable going through Amazon than ebay.

I broke done and ordered some of these on Ebay as well.

They are exactly the same light output, brightness, zoom, you name it. Just that these run on 3 AAA's and the batteries are in the front instead of the back of the light. Just as good IMO as the $25 headlamp, just has a little bit shorter battery life than the 18650.

I Bought 2 of them from EBAY. One of the Batteries went bad after only 1 charge. The charger and the light were fine. I Emailed the seller and asked about getting another battery, how much etc. I recieved a package in the mail the next week. Another complete Light charger and Battery.. Thought that was pretty cool.

How do you guys make these headlamps shine a red light? My $20 EBAY Headlamp arrived today. I have some red light gel paper, but the flat plastic gel paper will not fit over the convex lens on the headlamp. Do you take the headlight apart to install the red gel paper inside somehow? I tried taking mine apart, but I could not get into the area behind the lens. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

WOW, you guys really have this stuff down to a science. I'm gonna need to get a Butler Creek scope cover to install the red lens. Thanks for that tip pmack.

The red gel sheet I purchased from EBAY (not knowing the difference) was the "pale red FX-166 from Soundnpics" if that will work.

Rosco "Fire 19" is fine, the term red gel paper gets thrown around like "kill light" and "kleenex" never quite sure what you're talking about unless you get specific.
