While at the range today, one of the air-gun guys was there. He was definetly a hard core airgunner. Had two rifles, both were high end and very nice. Claimed with optics, they were over 2 grand each. He let me shoot one of them, although it was nice, 2 grand??? Way to serious for me.

Pcp's are outrageously priced!! Plus filling equipment and optics and your into some serious cash. They are cheap to chute though! Kinda like dating a high maintenance woman that drinks PBR.

Then you need to add the compressor to fill them to 4500 psi in a lot of cases which is that again by the time your done with the shoebox compressor and fittings.

That said the PCP's shoot tremendous, the consistency and accuracy of them is really amazing. Even the inexpensive Discovery or Marauder PCP's are great air rifles. You'd be hard pressed to beat them with a rimfire rifle for accuracy. Let alone that you can buy a 500 count tin of pellets for under $9 still, I purchased one when I started to see the .22lr ammo climbing...at $25 a brick I decided it was time to invest in a PCP setup. I've got no regrets.

There are several youtube videos of guys who hunt starlings just like they are prarie dogs using 17, 22, and 25 caliber air guns. Watch a couple of those videos and you can see why they spend the money they do on their air guns.

Just for comparison sake, about 6 or 7 years ago I was into a game called Field Target that uses air rifles. My custom cost 5 grand and the scope another 3k. That was nothing compared to the travel costs for competitions. When u get into any sport at the top level things get expensive fast.

I have had a number of high end air rifles and although quite expensive they are very impressive to shoot.
Thousands of dead starlings show proof of the accuracy.
One problem is getting parts/repair for some makes after a few years.

Playing at the top is always expensive. My daughter got a full NCAA scholarship to college for rifle. It only cost me about 40K to make that happen. Actually more than that if you add in gas and hotels.
You pay your money and take your chances.

Well , you don't have to break the bank to shoot a pellet gun and have fun . I got an Umarex Octane break barrel nitro piston rifle. Just over 2 hundred dollars , shoots hard and accurate . Scope included seems to be ok for now. I shoot it a lot at sparrows and starlings. Longest shot on starling....80 yards and sparrows 50 plus repeatedly. Jim

Went to one of the clubs last night that hold weekly airgun matchs. Quite fun actually. Shot everything from $70. springers to high end rifles. I'm not hooked yet but nibbling at the bait. Wonder how much this is gonna cost?

It won't be bad at first you'll buy a rifle....hand pump and some pellets. After you shoot a few tins and decided that pumping takes too long it will double in price...then you'll see another one that has better efficiency and you'll buy that or go full blown custom and put $800 worth of parts on a $500 air rifle.

I have been kicking around the idea of getting one of those .25 caliber ones that are like $600 for hunting in city limits.. There are lots of wash area's and fields around that are a few acres big that hold coyotes and would be fun to shoot with the kids. But like pyscodog, just nibbling at the idea.

I took the plunge a few years ago and bought a cz s200 and hill pump for around $800 total. It's was a big investment for a pellet chucker but I squirrel hunt and shoot starlings a lot. They are really safe for shooting up trees.

Been looking at two PCP's, Airforce Condor and the Airforce Edge. The Edge is pretty much a target rifle. It has really low FPS and only about enough ft.lbs. to knock down the steel targets at 10 meters. Not for hunting at all.

Depending on caliber you're looking for Pyramid Air does sell refurb Condors at a pretty substantial savings. When I looked at them it was around $100 cheaper for a refurb.

The Marauder is a well regarded PCP and can be had for under $500 through Pyramid if you use their "PYS-75" $75 off coupon code....a 22 or 25 cal Maurader is a great hunting rifle and the shroud really quiets it down.
