I've been thinking about getting a .204 Ruger upper for my Rock River AR-15. It seems that you would not be able to seat the bullets very far out and still get them to run through a mil-spec magazine. Bullets seem limited to 32-50 grains that I am aware of, and they look like they are seated fairly deep. Some of Hodgdon's data shows everything but the 50 grain bullets are under the 2.250 COAL, and would go through a standard AR-15 magazine. They also show the 50 grainers at 2.300, or about .040 over the 2.260 that will work in most magazines. Are the chamber throats short to handle this in the ARs?
Another thing that has me wondering is the higher pressures the 204 Ruger generates. Does case life get shorter because of the higher pressures in the AR-15? The 50 grain bullets don't seem to do any better in the 204 than they do in the 223 Rem. so I doubt they get much use anyhow.
If you have one of these ARs in 204, I would be interested in your opinions and the results your getting.
