.204 VS .17 Rem in AR-15

I have talked to Mike at D-Tech. He will gladly build me an upper in either 17 Rem or 204 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif For use as A Calling rifle for Coyotes and Bobcats. No Shots over 200 yards. Which would you like best ?? I have the Bushmaster Varminter in .223 so that is the lower I would use and NO I probably do not NEED the 17 or 204 but I WANT one anyway /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
204 is the only way to go here!
17Rem is a sleeper though, many would say no way a .17 is a yote caliber but it will surprise you.

I still have to say 204, it's like the wave of the future.

That right there is why my next upper will be in 20 Tac....much more/better brass options.
 
At $17 per hundred, .204 brass is cheap. I wouldn't think that would even be a factor.

As for the question, .204. I've only shot a .17 once, so I'm basing this on no real knowledge of the .17. I've shot the .204 bunches, and killed bunches of coyotes with it. No question about it, it kills coyotes as good as my Swift and doesn't leave a big hole to sew up later.

I just got 500 .223 cases from a PM member for $5...now that is what I call cheap!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I too am a HUGE .204 fan...since the 20 tac. is basically ballistically identical, I'm a big fan of both!
 
That is something to consider because when the coyotes are coming in and the AR is going off I tend to lose some 223 brass! Anyone else have this problem??
 
Based on my experience with the .17 Remington, you can't go wrong with this cartridge for ranges under 250 yards. Get a 1:9 twist barrel that will stabilize the 30 gr. 17 cal bullets. I've read that the .17 Rem is not enough gun for big midwestern coyotes, but I've killed 40 lb.(weighed on a scale, not just guesstimated) southeastern coyotes that didn't know that. Most kills are DRT or run 20-30 yards at the most. This caliber is also very fur-friendly on thin bobcat pelts.
Now, with all that said I admit that an AR in .20 Tactical will be the third AR that I own. My first one was a Bushmaster Varmint Special, my second will be a DTech in .17 Rem. In fact, if I can save enough money before my daughter's tuition is due again, I may ask Mike to build #2 and #3 at the same time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
17 definitely will kill yotes - but if your shooting in any kind of wind - good luck hitting them. Especially out 200 or more yards. Been there done that - now shooting 223 and 22-250. Here in KS there is always wind to deal with.

I have no problems with the l7 Rem but you must handload to get great performance. Largest yote I have killed with my .17 was 42-lbs. Bang/Flop! As for the wind, my 30gr high BC bullets will shoot as good or better than my .220 Swift in the wind out to 500 yds. Me, I see no use for a .204 but everyone likes something different.

On the .204 TAC .20, I would have to agree on the .223 brass being cheap and the way to go in my opinion with a .20 cal.
