Ok so im about to pick up a new Ruger M77 Hawkeye Predator in 22-250 for the up and coming season. The question i have is what bullet performes well in this caliber with a 1;14 twist? I already have some 53grn. Hornady V-Max BT's that I had planned to load for a buddys .223AR. On the discription of the bullet it says recommended for a 1:12 twist or faster? What makes a specific bullet better for different twist rates other than weight? What bullets are some of you using with a 1;14 twist?

The length of projectile is the determining factor.

I have a M70 that has a 1:14 twist. It loves 50 and 55 grain NBT. I also shoot 60 grain Nosler partitions out of it. The 60 Partition is shorter than the 55 NBT.

That being said every weapon has projectiles it likes and dislikes.

You should be good with a 50 grain in your 14 twist but it depends of several things.

Use this to figure out what you can stabilize

This will also give you an idea

Thanx, that makes things a little easier! What about boat tail compared to flat base? I understand BT is a little better for longer ranges, but would FB be better for hunting?

BT will shoot flatter over long ranges because of BC.
Either one will work well killing things.

BT will make the Projectile longer needing faster twist.
That is why I can shoot a 60 partition and not a 60 BT in my weapon.

Ok, that all makes sense.

Thank you for the info!!

Anyone else getting good results with a specific bullet out of a similar rifle please keep the comments coming!

The tiny little boat tails on 50 and 55 grain bullets don't have enough "boat" in them to do anything... shoot the bullet at groups the best.

TC predator, Berger 52 gr, Varget, 3600 fps.
200 yards off sticks.1/2" hash marks.
You want your gun to shoot about like this. , don't settle for OK, or pretty good....

Take it for what it's worth, I'm shooting 50 Z-Maxs @ 3680 out a 1:14 twist 26" 223AI with 8208 XBR. I know it's not a 22-250 but it's close to 22-250 velocity...

Thanx to all for the reply's! Jetman, i was able to track down some berger 52gr varment bullets so i went ahead and ordered them. Varget is what I use for my 308 and plan to use it for the 22-250 also for the fact that ill be using it in a variety of different temps. Hopefully i can work up a sub MOA round with this combo

52 Amax, imr 4007 ssc. Best that I'd found for my 700 vls 1-14 twist. Under 1/2 moa to 600. Best 2.5" at 600 yards 5 shots. The 53 vmax was too long and not as accurate in this rifle.

Hope you like it, there my go to coyote load now summer -100* and winter- -35*
Play around with velocity, the groups will change with speed...

I use varget for 308 and 22-250 and 223. Great powder for all season shooting.

My OLD Ruger 77 Varminter in 22-250 (1 in 14 twist) likes the Sierra 52 Gr Match King and shoots the Sierra 63 Gr. SMP's into very small groups. The 52 Gr MK likes to be pushed by H380, IMR 4064 or Vit.N140 all with CCI 200 primers. The 63 SMP likes the IMR 4064 and CCI 200 Primers.

Years ago, I shot 4064 and 4895 with 55g Sierra flat base spt in the 77. As the throat got long, I went to the Sierra 63g Flat base with both 4064 and 4350. The 63g is a very accurate bullet and just kills everything you shoot very dead, including deer and antelope.

I have a CZ 550 22-250 1:14 and I've found that 52 gr SMK's over H4895 are the most accurate. Your rifle may or may not like it but It could be a good starting point.

My Hawkeye 22/250 really likes 40 and 50 gr. v-max's in front of 4064. I also tried a few 60 gr. v-max's which weren't as impressive. Maybe if I worked at it a bit I could get them to shoot a little better, but the 50's shoot so well no matter what I fill the case with I haven't really bothered.

52 MK's 39grains of XBR 1/4" groups in 10 mph wind 3900fps
36 VG 42 of XBR. 1/2" groups no wind 200 yards 4430 fps
Rem 700 sps

My favorite .22 cal. bullets for the .223 .22-250 or Swift are either 50 gr. Blitzking or Vmax.. If I can't do it with those I need to move up a couple caliber.. They have killed gophers though deer.. Great coyote bullets.. Probably a bit rough on foxes..
