22-250 and Performance Powder

I have tried to find a load for 22-250 with 50 to 55 grn bullet and Performance Powder. Hodgdon starts at a 60 grn bullet and goes up from there. They do not publish a load with a lighter bullet.

Went to Sportsmen's today and found a box of Hornady Performance with 50 grn V-Max bullets. I bought the 20 round box and took it home to dismantle a cartridge. Tough to do since the bullet has a cannalure and it its crimped in. In any case, after pounding away with the kinetic, I got the bullet out. Powder charge was 40.0 grn of Performance. I reloaded a few shells with 40 grns of Performance and 50 grn V-Max. I have a 20 yrd range in my basement to get a new gun/scope combo on paper and to test pressure signs. It was a stiff load but no real signs of pressure problems. I can not chrono in my small space because of lighting issues, but it looks like the load has promise.

Thought that I would share this info. I will be able to chrono my loads next week and will report back.

I'm loading 50gr PSP pushing with 35 grains of H3895. Groups sub 1" @ 100 yards.
 
I think you are talking about Superformance powder?
The factory ammo does NOT use that powder, it is a propriatary blend that you cannot buy.
As to the reason they start with such a heavy bullet in the data, is because Superformance is a VERY slow powder. It is about the same speed as Supreme 780.

That is the reason I bet the reloads will be much slower.

I was looking at a few new powders from Hodgdon and IMR recently. The loading data seemed like it was lacking and I thought about how no one else has any data for these powders. So I passed on trying them.

Looked at superformance too and wasn't too impressed with the gun powder.

So, a few months later I switched to Alliant powder.

This description seems to suggest that the product available to handloaders is the same product used in the Superferformance factory loads.

Making this product available to handloaders makes sense to me. One might argue that they would keep the product in-house to increase loaded ammo sales. I don't think handloaders think like that. I won't buy factory ammo when I can handload, even if the factory boasts about an increase in fps. The only reason I would buy factory would be a killer deal or I really need the brass and I can't get it any other way.
 
You CAN buy the super performance powder. Listed on Hodgens site as well as in stores.
