I am buying a new Savage 22-250 to hunt coyotes. I would like to get some advice from some of you guys who have one of these guns, do I need the heavy barrell? I have talked with some dealers and some say the heavy barrell is good for accuracy and I have had others tell me it sucks to carry it. What would you do?

I think that if you are hunting mainly coyotes I would go with the sporter barrel and it will be easy to carry around. I don't think you will suffer much ,if any, accuracy loss, especially with a Savage.

Welcome to Predator Masters, 2zwudz.

Just about all my rifles are full bull barrel, but I'm not particularly weight sensitive. If you are going to do a lot of walking, and weight bothers you, a sporter barrel be for you.

If you ever shoot more than a couple of shots at a time, especially at small targets (p-dogs, ground squirrels, or at the range) then a bullbarrel will hold it's accuracy much better after heating up.

I have a savage model 10 22-250 with the fluted bull barrel, and it is a bit heavy to carry around, but it is dead on. I dont mind the weight myself, but then again I use a Savage 12bvss in .308 for deer hunting.

I have a Savage 22-250 with the 26" bull. I would not buy this type of gun for a "carry" gun--- but that is just my opinion. I found myself grabbing one of my lighter guns, and rarely take it yote hunting anymore. It just plain gets heavy after awile, and the yotes will rarely notice they weren't shot with a bull barrel. It is VERY accurate though.

Keep this in mind.... Any gun, either a sporter weight barrel or a bull barrel is far more accurate than most shooters are, especially in field conditions.

So the sporter weight barrel shoots 1" groups versus the bull barrel at 1/2" groups. In field conditions you will not be able to hold steady enough to
gain any appreciable accuracy.

However, you can get rid of some weight! I have a heavy bbl savage and it gets to be a beayatch to carry during the day!

I own a savage in 22-250 with a reg. barrell and it is super dead on accurate. I would vote against a bull barrell unless you primary prey is something like a priarie dog.

If you consider "bonk-ability" important you might want the heavy barrel.
I have both types, a sporter weight does all you need unless you call them really close, then the "Bonk-ability"of the weapon becomes important.
Some might disagree but a heavy barrel at a given velocity will definitly "bonk" harder than a light barrel.
so if you get them close enough to bonk or if you just like heavy barrels get one, but you certainly dont 'need" one to hunt yotes.
mostly you need to go hunting! LOL

I have a ruger with the heavy barrel and it rarely leaves the cabinet now. Yeah i can hit a quarter at 200 yards but its sucks like crazy to have to carry that thing any amount of distance. I carry my .243 because it is so light weight.

I have a savage 10-fp with a .308 and a 22-250 barrel. Both are heavy barrels. While they are both heavy, I dont seam to struggle carrying it around coyote hunting or deer hunting. Since I do alot of target shooting I would own nothing but a heavy barrel. If you know you will only be using it for coyote hunting where you only shoot a round or 2 in 30 minutes, the sporter will be plenty good.

2zwudz,

The dealer you talked with gave you good advise.

Bofire, "bonk-ability" is a term I have never heard of, please define, thanks.

Bill

Go for the sporter weight. The quick pointing capability of the lighter weight barrel will kill you far more coyotes than the accuracy of a heavy barrel ever will.

Go forth and slay 'yotes!

I don't like recoil and with a bull barrel, recoil is at a mimimum. I have a tc encore with a bull barrel and love it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Forget the heavy barrel with a coyote gun. It is cumbersum in the stand, hard to shoot off ahnd and a pain getting in and out of the trauck with. A heavy barrel for pdog gun or a bench gun is great. For a calling gun get the light barrell.

hello..get what feel's comfortable to you...it's far more important than you may realize...in my humble opinion i see no need for a "heavy or bull" barrel in a calling rifle...just my thought's...good luck !!

I'm not convinced that you'd notice a major difference in accuracy out of a cold barrel in either a sporter weight or heavy barrel. Since I've never personaly shot more than 3 times at a coyote, (missed all three times I might add), the sporter barrel would always be my choice. If you want to use your rifle mainly to hunt varmints like ground squirrels or p-dogs and only an occational coyote than the heavy barrel might be the way to go.

i carry around not a savage but an ar full bull 24" and I can tell you that after about half a mile of walking and seeing your hunting buddy still having spring in his step carrying a light gun that can shoot just as well as your "full blown sniper" setup and your shoulders hurt the light gun makes more sense then you can ever imagine. (a mile later life really sucked that thing seemed like it was 50lbs)maybe at 22yrs of the life i'm just getting weak i guess all sorts of things could be happening.

Light barrel for sure a bull barrel only matters after many shots and if you have a quick enough finger to heat up a coyote gun barrel you must be god and happily married.
Good Luck

For a calling rifle the lighter rifle is the way to go!
If the recoil of a 22-250 bothers you then you have a problem in your head, lol... Just kidding, although I have never, ever heard of anyone complaining about a 250's recoil...
I have carried some of my heavy rifles calling and it begins to $uck after a few stands, especially when you are watching your buddy do the same thing you are doing but with a LIGHT rifle..
Leave the heavy barrels on the bench and carry your sporter weights on coyote stands!
You wont regret getting a light coyote gun! If you really get into coyotes that is.... Ron

i have always liked the heavy barrels.i am a big guy and the wight dosnt get to me on the other hand my nephew is a little guy and they wear him out.
