22-250 lightweight a bad idea?

Alright, I currently have:

Custom Savage 11 .243 with fluted shilen 26" Varmint contour barrel and boyds thumbhole stock

Savage 12 .204 (26" bull barrel cut down to 22") with boyds tacticool stock

AR15 with 24" WOA bull barrel

See the trend?... All fairly heavy guys. I was wanting to add a 22-250 to my yote arsenal and was thinking of making a ligthweight gun 20-22" sporter style barrel and light stock. Is this a little backwards with the 22-250 round?

I am now thinking I should have made the .204 a lightweight (maybe a cz 527) and got the 22-250 in the heavy barrel... but there's no turning back now.

Should I just stick with the heavy gun trend or will the 22-250 shoot just fine with the shorter more pencil like barrel??

Thanks guys

The older I get the less I enjoy carrying a heavy rifle. I have a .22-250 sportier for yotes and think it is about perfect. I even plan on deer hunting some with it this season.

I have just a regular Rem 700 SPS stainless 22-250 that shoots well nothing at all done to it VXII 4-12 I find myself carrying it a lot lately pretty handy little rifle don't mind packing it aways

you'll be fine with the lighter gun. I've done the same thing to myself on the heavy guns and i'll probably do the same thing with a lightweight 22-250 with some heavy bullets.

The 22-250 is a great little round, most #1 contour barrels shoot pretty well and will hold moa or close to moa at reasonable ranges. They do start to heat up after the third or so round but if it's just a hunting rifle that shouldn't be a problem.

The 22-250 i use is a savage model 16 accustock/accutrigger with a simple bushnell trophy 3-9x40bdc scope, loaded with four rounds and sling it comes in right at 9 lbs. While thats not really a light rifle it is still lighter than what your used to now.

Before my vision problems i was using a savage lightweight hunter in .260 that scoped and loaded came in at 7 1/2 lbs, that was drt on anything you aimed at.

My pencil barrel Savage 10 .223 shoots just as good(maybe better)as my Savage 12FV .22-250 bull barrel. I know there 2 different chamberings, but my point is the skinny barrels can be just as accurate not to mention lighter.

find a cheap kimber Montana 84M have pacnor rebarrel it with a 8.5 - 9 twist montana contour load it up with 75grn a-max and feel free to shoot anything from bear to dogs. it will be a killin machine all in under 7#

I carry my little Axis in .223 more than I carry my Savage in .22-250.
Axis - 22" sporter bbl
Savage - 26" Varmint bbl

Accuracy in on par.

I had a Ruger 77R and a 700BDL in 22-250 and they both shot fine, I agree the older you get the less you feel like dragging a varminter around.

After lurking around this site for a while, and reading recommendations I bought a Stevens 200 in 22-250. Not a very heavy rifle. It shoots like this at 200 yards (3/4").

I think sustained fire in a prairie dog colony might do it in. If I were to do a heavy barreled 22-250 it would probably be a 1:8 twist for those long heavy bullets.

If you don't have a lightweight rifle, a 22-250 would be a good choice. A short 20-22" barrel will be plenty accurate. A lightweight rifle is also nice to carry if you do a lot of walking to your stands.

While not a 22-250, I have a Savage model 11 in .223 that I carry more than any of my other rifles. Fairly light weight and will shoot 1/2 inch groups with good reloads using 50-55 grain Nosler or Hornady bullets. While not benchrest accuracy, it is plenty good for varmit hunting where conditions are less than ideal most of the time. I know the gun and ammo are up to the task, it is the shooter that is the weakest link.

I think you will be fine with a sporter weight in 22-250.

Since you already have a Savage 243, I would get a Remington SPS stainess in 243, heck of a lot more knock down than a 22/250. We deer hunt in Kansas, we have taken several 200+ lb bucks with the 243 and 100g Hornady BTSP!

Well I'm pretty fond of savages... the stocks usually suck but I like to replace them with Boyes.... I'm leaning towards a savage 16 22-250 with a Boyds prairie Hunter stock... or maybe the 16 weather warrior with the accustock

my buddy has a light weight Ruger 77 in 220 Swift. It does get hot after about the third shot but it is what he likes to carry and use while out hunting coyote. For prairie dogs he has a nice #1 in 22-250 and .223 for volume shooting.

My brother just had a Remington 700 in 220 Swift built. It is a heavy rifle and he found out that it is more fun to shoot it at the range than it is to carry it in the hills out looking for Coyote. He gave me a hard time about my little Rem 700 Adl at the range but when carrying it out hunting I was the one giving him the hard time.
