22-250 reloading problems

I was having the same problem with a set of 7x57 dies. I reload 9 different calibers and the only prob has been with this one. Borrow a set of dies from a buddy and I think you will see the "brass is too soft" will be shot out of the window. It is a problem with the expander. You can opt to run the prepped and empty case into your seating die a tad until you feel pressure, then set the die to keep uniformity. It works, but isn't a true fix...too much and you will crimp the case while seating bullet...too little and you have bullets backing into cases during recoil. I would borrow a set of dies and see if that solves the problem....If it does, send yours back for free fix or splurge the 28.00 for a new set. Just my 2 cents worth.

Getfoxy,
Not trying to be a wise guy, but I just noticed you said something about "brass that was pulled out of the oven." What is the "oven" all about? If more than normal heat/friction was applied during resizing, your brass may have expanded that explains the bullet falling through.

getfoxy,
I don't think leaving teh brass in teh oveen too long will cause what you have described. It easy or too hard to make judgements over the net, but it sounds like you are not fully sizing the brass and teh expander isn't adjusted properly too. Different cases feel different when sizing them.

I'd insert the die in the press, adjust it so when you have the lever pulled down it is touching the ram and then turn it another one screw turn down, lock it in place, then screw teh expander pin down until the end of the pin is protruding about 3/8" below the bottom of the sizing die and then size a lubed case all the way down to touching the ram again.

Let me know how you go with that.

There ya go.. For whatever reason those oven bullets are junk. Yup toss em and start over..

Though I have no doubt that they were in the oven for too long (whatever that means) I don't think that was the cause of the problem. The worst that could happen is that the brass got gripped softly. Its not going to allow a slug to drop right through. I still think this is a partialy FL sizing issue.

P.S. irrelevant of the colour of the apron brass needs at least 800°F or 425°C for annealing. 300F just doesn't even give it a tan! "I over cooked my brass" NO!

Was the brass already sized or did you size them after drying them? If you tried putting bullets in them after being in the oven, then the heat caused them to expand slightly and did not go back to size after cooling. If that is the way it happend, try resizing them again.

The brass had been resized I tried resizing again but nothing worked. But it only did it to the brass that was in the oven. I'd like to know what details are missing

Buckeye. My tumbler just came in yesterday evening. I didn't have a tumbler when this incident took place.

Either way. The brass is thrown out, my tumbler is here, my die is resizing everything properly just let this one die.

Thanks. It's not a big deal now. I have discarded that brass, and all seems to be well. I just thought maybe it was something worth mentioning
