22-250 vs. pigs

Yeah, I hear ya Yellowhammer. Like I said, if I lived there I might have a different attitude. New Mexico doesn't have the wealth of wildlife that Texas has, so I've become quite stingy with the meat I am able to get my hands on. I understand that many landowners consider hogs as pests, much like coyotes. I sure don't eat coyotes! It's too bad there isn't a better mechanism for getting that meat to people who want/need it though.

Trichinosis. But, no more than domestic hogs. That is why you always cook pork thoughly even store bought pork.

I was at the Outback steak house the other day and ordered the pork chops. The waitress asked me how I would liked them cooked and I asked what do you mean. She replies medium, well, etc. I looked at her and laughed as I have never been asked that before. I told well as I didnt want to be sick. I thought this was kinda odd.

I have a 22-250 and shot a 160lb sow at 300 yards and dropped it in its tracks. The 55grn bullet did not go through the pig. Shot placement is the most important thing. I have shot around 11 deer with it and most of them dropped in their tracks. I wouldn't take anything for my 250.

Are there any pig hunters in oklahoma on this forum? I live in tulsa, and have heard about the hogs about an hour south of here. I would like to find out more. I think it sounds more interesting than hunting our little bitty deer (sometimes confused with greyhounds)

My freezer is full and I’m feeling Christmassy so tomorrow I’m going to serve up some pork tar tar for my furry coyote and feathery buzzard friends. I love that warm fuzzy feeling I get from helping others.

Now that's an interesting way to put it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Gotta watch out for our furry brethren. What does a "two-day old dead hog" distress call sound like anyway? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

The pigs had a temporary reprieve this weekend as I was try to close the deal on a nice whitetail buck before the end of general season. Should have stuck to pigs because I missed the shot on the buck and I saw plenty of pigs. Oh well.

I just fond this thread and thought I would add my .02.
As you can tell by my call handle I am a hog trapper and hunter. I hunt hogs as much or more than yotes. Large ( stink meat ) hogs can be soaked in a brine, This makes the hogs edible and stink free. All boars that are younger than breeding age are good eating and can weigh as much as 100 or so pounds. Sows are excellent eating no matter how big they are.
We have hog buyers here that shipps the hogs to South Texas to be butchered and then the meat is shipped to Asia, where stink meat is highly sought after.
Another thing to keep in mind is a hogs anotomy is different than a deer. A hogs heart and lungs is between its shoulders and forward. Not behind the shoulders like a deer. Shoulder forward shots or 1/4 away shots are best

What does you brine consist of and how long do you pickle it? I heard Asians like rotton eggs and gallbladder fluid also. I worked with an Chinese guy that ate his eyelashes when they fell out. He said it was good luck.

Its a vinager/salt brine that you mix with ice water. I soak all my hog meat in ice water for 4 to 5 days draining daily and adding ice as needed. It gets all the blood out of the meat. I will find the recipe for the brine and post it when I get home from work.

Here is the brine recipe:
After your meat has soaked in ice water for 3 or more days, drain cooler, fill with fresh water to cover meat. Add 2 cups of kosher salt and mix till it desolves, then add 1 small bottle of vinager and 16 oz. of lemon juice. The acid in the vinager and lemon juice break down the protein in the meat resulting in a tender oderless meat. You can also add 4 liters of mountain dew instead of lemon juice for a sweeter taste. Some poeple even add brown suger.I think it helps tenderize. This is all done it a 150 qt cooler.

Texas Tom,

I was born and raised in south central Lousiaina shooting and eating wild feral hogs. I have shot them with everyting from a .22 rifle to my .264 Win. Mag. and a shotgun with squirrel shot. The best shot, depending upon the shot angle is: 1) in the ear hole, 2) behind the ear, 3) thru the eye, or 4) in the neck at the base of the skull. If you shoot a boar, especially an old boar, in the shoulder - It just [beeep] him off. The old boars have a "fighting pad" protecting the shoulder and front rib area...Takes a good bullet to penetrate this pad. The meat(sow) is delicious and the fat is not marbled in the meat...it is on the outside. The meat is lean and dark red. Now if you kill a boar, leave it for the coyotes and now you have a "baited" spot. I have just moved to the North Texas(Borger) area and know quite a lot about hunting or trapping hogs. Do you need any help?

Maw Bell,
Could you say anyhing about how to snare hogs? What would be the best setup etc.(and how you do it)
Also, what would you say would be the MAX range you would shoot one with a 223 to have a clean kill?
Many thanks

Appreciate the offer maw bell but I think we have thinned out the herd temporarily. Three hog traps working around the clock and a shoot on sight order have done wonders. The ranch next door killed 80 in one week. Everybody has full freezers but the pigs cleaned up all the acorns and I’m worried that will affect our deer heard negatively. Went out a couple weeks ago and did not see any pigs and was able to shoot a nice 11pt wt. tail buck. I have not seen or heard any turkey in quite awhile and I believe the pigs have something to do with that. We do have quite a buzzard colony and the coyotes look pretty fat. You are right about the meat being red, nothing like that pale grocery store stuff. Shot a big boar last year with 7.62x39 mini 30 at 15 feet quartered away bullet went in behind the shoulder and came out thru the opposite shoulder pad made a mess inside and he still ran 20 yards. You getting any fires up there?
