22-250 Why is it a love or hate caliber?

I haven't owned my 22-250 very long. I got it to take the place of my .25-06 that I used for varminting for over 30 years. The 06 was capable of shots past 500 yards.

Out of curiousity how far will the 22-250 shoot and still take varmints?
 
depending on the bullet it works past 500 also. i have had several 22-250s and have had zero problems with accuracy. but i also handload for all my rifles so that helps alot. i have never burnt out a barrel to the point it will not shoot well even when pushing light bullets up to 4450fps. but having said that... to each their own. if everyone liked the same caliber there only only be one and how boring would that be

I'm not familiar with the sf varmint. The VSSF II was 1060 last Oct. I ended up with the 700 VS SPS stainless in .22-250 for 480, a big difference. I upgraded the stock and trigger pretty quickly but still never came close to 1060.
 
I shoot a 52gr A-Max at 3600fps. Great bullet, no probems with fur damage. Unless you hit the shoulder. Any shot to the ribs zero fur damage. It will splash with a quarting to shot, but still kills.
 
I sold my old Rem 700 22-250 when I had to start shooting lead free bullets in California's Condor Zone. The barrel twist was way too slow to shoot lead free 50 gr to 62 gr bullets.

After 4 years of not having a 22-250 I couldn't stand it any longer so I had one made up for shooting lead free bullets. It is a Rem 700 with a Hart 1-8" twist barrel. With the Barnes 55 gr MPG bullets it has worked great on the 6 coyotes that I have shot with it.
 
I have a bad feeling about lead free bullets and hope we don't see those anywhere else other then CA. Heck, I'm not even that happy with the plastic tips as some rifles won't even shoot the 55 gr accurately. I've noticed my rifle with 1:14" twist shoots lead tip 55 gr bullets just a little better then plastic tip. For that reason I'm shooting 50 and 52 gr.
 
I like the 250 for my hunting area, shots can be out their a bit, yet still packs good energy. I did have to play a bit with different bullet combinations to keep my fur damage down and pay attention to shot placement as I am a hide hunter for sure but overall I think its a very versatile cartridge.
 
The 22/250 is one of my all time favorite rounds. I've had it in Savage,Tikka and Remington. Sporter and varmint configurations. I've used them for woodhucks mostly,a couple New Mexican coyotes,and even a few whitetails. Just plain love that little cartridge.
 
220 Swift I think it is the best .224 cal. Chambering to date. As for being a barrel burner , you don't have to load 40 gr. Bullets at macho speeds to get great results. I have owned a swift for the last 7 years and it sends 55 gr. Pills down range at 3850 fps dependably. It had been doing it so well that I even sold my AR . My swift is my go to calling rig.
 
I love the .22-250. I do not love the .22-250 nut swingers.

What gets me is the "You'll be undergunned unless you're using a .22-250" and the "A .22-250 will out shoot it every day of the week" and finally "If you're serious about shooting coyotes, you'll want a .22-250".

That kind of stuff drives me nuts. But the actual caliber itself is fun to shoot, accurate and packs a wallop!

X2, it gets old hearing difinitives like that. that one sucks this is better etc. there are so many options and so many will work as good as the other. I dont hate any caliber or chambering, i have too much stuff to do to devote time to hating something trivial like that. i personally have no interest or desire to have a 223 at all. and some hear that and take it personally like they designed it, the 223 is the best things blah blah blah, but it doesnt do it for me so i dont own one. BUT i do like the 223AI and would like to own one.

That said i very much like the 22-250. it is my go to spot and stalk coyote gun, which is what i have been doing since i was a teenager long before i got into calling. and in that role, or even calling it is a hammer and works for me and i dont really care if it works for others. shoot what you shoot because that is what you want to shoot. JMO YMMV
 
I have both the .223 and the 22-250, they both kill coyotes for me.
I haven't had any problems with either one, but I don't shoot 1000's of rounds a year thru them.
 
I have shot both the 22-250 and 220 Swift and I like the 250. I don't like not be able to get out to the lands with the bullet selection. Rick
 
I don't love or hate the 22-250, it works well for spot and stalk or shooting over a carcass, but so do several other calibers. I won't go into how many varmint calibers I own, but if you don't own a 22-250 you can't own them all. I'll add that I have a 22-250 because I liked the rifle it was chambered in, a belgian browning safari.
