I was just wondering about the 22-250. Can you guys to tell me how good this round is. Can you drop a deer with one. Whats the maximum effective range. Im getting ready to buy the Olympic Arms 22-250 and im just worried about what im purchasing. hoping you guys can make it where im not so nervouse about it.
 
22-250 isn't legal for deer everywhere, just wanted to say that first off.

That being said, here in Texas people kill deer every year with the 22-250. We have small bodied deer and it doesn't take much to drop one. Just choose the right load for deer and you'll be ok as long as you put the bullet where it needs to be.

22-250 is capable of hitting varmints 500 yards out if you can shoot that well. It's a smoking little round that moves really fast. One of the best varmint calibers out there in my opinion.
 
Like was said, ain't legal in several states to shoot deer with that caliber. Secondly, are you in great shape because you'll end with a runner for sure. Ain't no way in heck I'd go Deer hunting with anything less than a .270 caliber, not even with a .243 that I admire a great deal. Might just be me, but no way on a 22-250 for that purpose. Thats a great coyote gun though!
 
I use 55 grain pointed soft points for coyote and deer. Neck shots of close and moving slow. Put one in the front shouldersand boiler room and they may run but not very far. You hit them in the brisket or leg with any caliber and you will have run offs.Never lost a deer with the 22.250. Just know where it is hitting. Know your gun and you will be fine. Deer are bigger up north in NY and I'm from franlin county. never had an issue.
 
I have killed a few deer in TX with one and dropped them dead with a high shoulder/neck shot. Not an optimal deer cartridge but will work with good placement at close range. I like it for predators as it's flat enough to hold dead on to 300 yds + and take the guess work out of ranging. Only drawback is it's hard on fur. I have yet to find a round that doesn't blow a big hole with anything other than a straight on shot. If you just want them dead out to 500 it's a good choice.
 
Frankly I think the .22-250 is the bar none the best coyote cartridge out there but there are better options for fox/coyote or deer/coyote combo guns. If you're wanting a combo gun I'd look a different cartridge.

Great gun for varmints but I dont think that you will be pleased with it on deer unless like some said your deer are in the 100 lb class.
 
i think the remington 700 bdl (wood) in 22-250 is one of the prettiest guns ever made. it is by far my favorite cartridge for predator hunting.
 
Far to be the best option available.
But with the right load and shot placement, you can get some results on small deer.

Ok so i didnt mean i was buying this gun for deer hunting. I was just asking if it could drop a deer to compare it to other rounds. I cant deer hunt with a rifle here in Illinois. I am only buying this rifle for coyote hunting and long range shooting. I was just trying to see what it could take down. The biggest game we have around here is deer so I was just wondering if it had the knock down power? Trust me not deer hunting with it. I also have a 6.8 SPC and it is supposibly a great deer round just trying to compare the 22-250 to it.

understood.....the 6.8 would make a better cartridge for your needs but after 175 yards it drops like a ton of bricks.
