i know this has been disscussed alot. but im going to use a .22lr for coyote hunting/. well im going to use cci stingers.well im jsut wondering what is the max range teh bullet can go. not to kill somethign, jstu max range. my dad is putign up a fuss about how it can go mile and a 1/2. but i dont belive it will jhit the idrt cause the trajectory woudl cause it to hit the dirt b4 then unless i was aimign up at a steep angle. thanks.

Sound like he is right to me! My dad would tell me things like that when I was first allowed to go by myself. I think for the most part he is just trying to make it stick in the back of your mind that your carrying a gun and not a toy. Its a safety thing. Everytime I Shoulder the rifle I always hear my old man "Becareful and only shoot in a direction that if you miss you can find the bullett."

first of all let me say that I don't reccomend the use of a .22LR for coyote hunting, however they will kill a coyote at close range,, say 40 yards and under,, the shot placement must be exactly on the money(boileroom) for a swift , clean kill.
As far as the .22LR's range, YES it can deflect and is capable of 1 1/2 mile range thats why I like the 17HMR, the 17 grn bullet will explode on contact and no deflection will occur or it will be minamull.

Good luck and smote the yote

Robert, if you call and shoot like you spell and write I would recomend you use a shotgun. At least it will kill out to 40 yards and have a better chance than a 22.

First off, you're about to make the same mistake that most people do when using a 22lr for coyotes, and is the reason so many people say a 22 is too light for coyotes. DO NOT USE STINGERS. The stingers and other hyper velocity 22lrs use a very light hollow point bullet that is designed to fully expand inside a squirells head. The bullets have no penetration and only piss-off a coyote. You need to use a round nose bullet that will get some penetration. And no, I'm not just guessing. Back about 1980 when the hyper velocity 22's were all the rage I shot a mangy coyote and filled him full of holes with different 22's. The best penetration was from high velocity solid points. The hyper velocity bullets were worthless. I have killed many coyotes with a 22lr and it always worked just fine. Why is it that on big game we always preach proper shot placement, only take shots in range, make sure of a clean kill etc., and with coyotes you should just start slinging lead and hope for a hit, maybe you'll hit him in the leg so he'll slow down for the rest of your shots. If you shoot a coyote with a proper 22lr bullet, in decent range, and put the bullet in the proper place, a coyote will die quite nicely. If you want to just sling lead from any angle and any range like most coyote hunters then you may need a 22 centerfire. Let me repeat once more, DON'T USE STINGERS.

bearbait. . .

your tips on the 22lr stinger sounds great! I actually started doing some research on these things to see if I could shoot 'em in my old Western Field 22lr. Sounds like I need to stick with the old standby. Do you recall what velocity was best?

I don't recall which high velocity solids I used, but I assume the performance of similar loads would be similar. I did the test after the first coyote I shot with stingers. It started about 15 yards and I know I hit him 4 times in the neck/chest area, 2 other shots I wasn't sure about. He ran off at an exceptionally high rate of speed. I went home and got my dog and followed him for over a mile and never found him. During the test, from 30 yds, most of the hyper velocity 22's completely disintegrated before penetrating 1.5".

150 yards for coyotes with a .22 mag? My thoughts are no. The .22 mag is a fox gun. Yes, it will and has killed coyotes but it's not what I would call a reliable coyote gun, especially at 150 yards.

Coyotes move fairly fast. A coyote at 150 yards can easily move far enough during the time of a .22 mag's bullet flight to cause you to end up with a gut shot animal. Consider the fact you are using a caliber on the light side anyway, and about any responsible hunter won't do it.

I use a .223.

Yep, a 22-250 would be a LOT better, albeit a little rough on the fur at times. Of course, if you handload you can always download some and that should help on fur damage.

I agree with coycaller...if you shoot anything like you write that coyote has quite a chance of gettin' out of there safely! ! Great post coy! HA HA HA ! !

Robert, in my opinion the only time a .22 rf should be used on coyotes is if it is in a trap. Between the eyes or behind the ear.

Here is a link to help you with the other problem. http://www.spelling.hemscott.net/

Everyone makes mistakes spelling but when 1/2 your post is spelled wrong it reflects negatively on predator hunters.

Take care

I always love it when you guys say a 22lr can't be an effective coyote gun. Cracks me up. Now if effective means shooting a yote 100 yards with one then no, it's not. Know your range, know your gun and you can do anything the gun and you are capable of. I have seen a guy take coyotes with a 22lr up to 75 yards reliably. Guy was a good shot, are you? I have seen a guy take coyotes with a .22mag at around 120 or so foxes 150, reliably. Guy was a good shot, are you? If you're not, get yourself a shotgun and get a tight pattern with #4 shot and you will be money at 40 yards every time. If you can call them in close use your .22 or .22 mag. It can work. You've just got to know how to use it. You will minimize losses with a bigger gun of course. You can miss the mark and still get a good kill from shock and penetration..something like that anyways. .22lr doesn't penetrate like a 30 ought. obviously. The guy talking about the non hollowpoints sounds like he has a point that they should penetrate better. I dunno, if you're good with it, give it a shot at close range. If not, buy a bigger gun or use a shotgun and call'em in close. I've found the CCI Velocitors pack a nice punch, but I haven't tried it on a coyote. I have a .243 for that.

I have smoked a big dog with a .243 and had him get away, let alone a .22.

I have shot lots of coyotes in traps with a 22, and that is about as far as i would want to push that round.
