22 Hornet...CZ or Ruger?

Will do but don't look for it to be anytime soon as I can't ever leave anything stock so as soon as I get it in my grubby little hands it'll be going for a ride to my gunsmiths for bedding and having the barrel shortened and threaded. I think 22in. should be plenty long and I'm guessing these things should be pretty quiet with a 223 can screwed on the end.

There is a good chance the CZ will be more accurate. But the Ruger's I have are better built than my 527 American. My old tang safety Ruger has typical M77 accuracy grouping most anything around 1.5" at 100yds.While my Hawkeye AW is the most accurate gun I own.The CZ puts 40 through 55gr loads in around a 1/4 to 3/4" at 100yds.

Depends on the scope.I used the rings CZ provided to mount Leups 2-7.With BC flip ups the bolt just barely clears.About 1/8" clearance.

I sure do not consider the bolts on my personal 527's to be ugly- or any part of the rifle for that matter. And I am curious as to why you call it a "backwards rifle". I never heard anyone call it that before.

Probably in reference to the safety lever operating backwards from most American rigles.

I ended up ordering the CZ in 22 Hornet. I have a Zeiss 3-9×50 scope I plan to put on it. Thanks for all the recommendations. I also found that CZ Store sells the 527 M1 trigger guard which is a flush fitting guard that goes with their 3 round flush mags. They are out of stock right now, but I will probably be buying one to eliminate that long mag sticking out.

Oh- maybe that's it. I guess I never considered it as being backward. I just look at it as being different from other guns. It doesn't bother me in any way.

Marco gets a kick out of "stirring the pot." That's why he continues in ever post to utter the word "ugly." We all need to be patient with him and allow him to get the attention he needs for the day.

Now, on to hopefully some more productive type of discussion. As the old saying goes, "there's more than one way to skin a cat" so here is how I personally have done it.

As to rings and bolt, I have medium quick detach on my CZ, but also I added a picatinny base that has a little rise to it, so that gives proper bolt clearance. I think the reason CZ added the high rings
is in order to get bolt clearance, which has been an issue that some have had in the past. I do know that there are bolt conversions available through James Calhoon that will take care of the issue of
not having the scope mounted so high. Personally I prefer to remedy the situation myself if possible.

I specifically got the picatinny base for two reasons. First is so that I can switch out scopes from daytime to my home-made night vision without much of a problem. More importantly however, is that
I wanted to mount the NV outfit as far forward on the rifle as I could get it, so as to keep the bullet camera out of my face. The picatinny base allowed that.

The picatinny base and mediums rings I am using have worked well for me, and the scope sits relatively low, or I will say not overly high.

Accuracy of CZ .17 Rem at 60 yards with home-made NV attachment. The rifle / load / scope is plenty good
enough for my intended needs at a coyote bait site.

As with most rifles, certain loads shoot better than others. The Kindlers are very good by most anyone's standards,
but the Hornady 25 HPS and the CZ just seem to like each other. The Kindler loads were almost a photocopy of each
other, both having the same group size and flyer. With some further experimenting I might could pull that flyer in.

David, with that rail/ring combo and that scope do you still get a good cheek weld or do you need to raise your head up slightly in order to get full view through the scope?

I always like to use a one piece rail and I'm considering the one from DIP Inc. but I'm a little quirky about cheek weld and not only do I hate having to lift my head up off the stock in order to get full view of the scope but my personal taste doesn't care for how a gun looks when there is a lot of gap between the barrel and scope. Your setup looks good and if I could get good cheek weld with that I'd be happy but I wouldn't want it any higher off the barrel than that.

And, It would be a gosh darn Greek tragedy and I'd just feel all empty inside if someone thought my gun was "ugly"!!! lol

B23,

I get a good cheek rest when using the daytime Leupold scope. I would view it as not too bad and acceptable. As you know, there are varying degrees of cheek weld from one rifle / scope / rings to another. I haven't noticed that I have to lift my head much if any when using that scope. I'm like you in that I don't like to have to lift my head in order to see well, and I don't like a big gap between scope and barrel either. The Leupold hasn't given me any issues to complain about. Currently I have the home-made outfit installed and sighted, so I can't go check it again without having to remove it and them replace it and rezero. But, if there was a problem with cheek weld, I would have remembered it.

While many of my rifles have scopes that sit lower, the setup with my CZ isn't bad.

I'm like Rustydog in that it really doesn't bother me at all when Marco says my gun is ugly. I know that down deep he really likes it, he just doesn't want to admit it publicly. I just like giving it back to him and calling him out for the way he continues to talk. If he were to try to buy the rifle from me, I wouldn't sell it to him. LOL.

I picked up this beauty just a month or so ago and am loving it so far. Already had a 22 Hornet in another rifle so this one is the CZ527 Varmint in 17 Hornet. CZ rings worked just fine for my scope and there are no issues with bolt clearance or cheek-weld for me. Also took all of 5 minutes to get used to the safety, so not sure why that seems to be an issue for some. Best and most important part for me is that it shoots fantastically well while having a fast follow-up shot if needed (unlike my single shot 22H).

No, I hear the Star Spangled Banner and see a fireworks display.

Nice outfit Weasel. What scope is that?

Thanks. It's a Pentax Gameseeker 30, 8-32x50. More zoom than needed maybe for chucks, but works great when I'm after distant sage rats.
