.22 Hornet for coyotes?

I have a question, I have a chance to buy a .22 Hornet at a real good deal and I was wondering if anyone has ever taken a coyote with it? Thats the only thing that I would want it for because I have some really good varmint rifles. Thankd for any replies.

The hornet is a great little round for coyotes, and Im speaking of called coyotes, not any type of long range stuff. I used mine almost exclusively last season, other than a half dozen taken with my 19 Calhoon.

I use the 22 Hornet for Jackal and I am very happy with the results as long as you limit your shots to 150 yards.

Yes the hornet will take yotes. I have a TC Carbine in 22 hornet. It is a sweet round, limited to about 100-150 with well placed shots. It is not going to give you bang flops very often. It is best reserved for smaller targets. I will be the last guy on earth to tell you not to buy a gun. A man needs all he can get. but it would not be my go to gun for yotes. I have actually taken a deer with mine, and it was a bang flop one shot on the ground event. Before I get flamed for that comment, I will explain. I had it in the stand beside my 25-06, I had been seeing some bobcats everyday and wanted one for the taxidermist(minimal fur damage and quiet) A small spike walked out and was walking directly toward me, I picked up the hornet and waited, as he walked past my stand about 20 yds away,I put the round in his left ear canal. That still does not make it a deer round.
If you reload, they are sweet guns and fun to shoot, by all means get the gun. But, dont expect it to perform like a 223 or similar yote getter.

Thanks for the advice. The varmints guns I was talking about having was a 17HMR and a 22 LR. I have some larger guns but I use all of them for deer. I thought about using my shotgun but I hunt a lot of pastures and it greatly limits my range. I was hunting with my 17HMR but the conditions have to almost be perfect for me to attempt a shot on a coyote with it. I mean no wind and with in 100 yards. I had to let some coyotes walk when I was using my 17HMR because of the wind and some was because of the distance. I dont think that I would shoot any coyotes any further with the .22 Hornet that I would with my 17HMR but I like the fact that the wind doesnt effect the .22 Hornet as much. What type of ammo do ya'll use when hunting with your .22 Hornets? Thanks again for the advice.

NC, tell us it ain't so !?!?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

There were a couple of articles about the Hornet that I read this winter, and it seems to be a toss-up. From what I can understand, it would be a MUCH better round than the HMR, and wouldn't be a bad round to load for. I think that you can find a little more info if you look here:

Good luck, neighbor!

Nc that latest bit of info helps with the comprehension on this end. Yes by allmeans get the hornet. Of those three(17hmr-22lr-hornet) The hornet will get the nod everytime. As for loads, you can do a search on here for hornet loads, seems a post a few weeks ago dealt with the hornet. my load was, if memory serves me right, around 11.5 grs of IMR 4227 behind any of the 45 gr hornet bullets from seirra or hornady. I would start out by buying 2 boxes of Winchester HP loads. Shoot them up and you have brass for life. BTW. what is the gun. make us jealous.

Its a Remington .22 Hornet. I dont remember what model number but im going to go pick it up tomorrow and ill let ya know. It has a Bushnell Elite Firefly scope on it and its a bolt action rifle. Its in really good shape no scrathes or dings or rust or anything. In getting it for $175. I checked on the price on the bushnell scope and this one is less than 6 months old and they sale for around the same price for what im getting the whole rifle for. He still has the sales recipt for the scope too. Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to get me a rifle that would do better than my 17HMR and then I ran across this deal.

NC, are you sure about it being a remington.
Winchester, Ruger, Anshultz, kimber, Brno/cz and Thompson, Browning and savage and cooper plaus a couple i can remember the names of maybe. But have never heard of a Remington in hornet. Could it have been rebarreled. Or possible I have just not kept up. Keep us posted on whether it is a rem.

Yeah I was wrong. I called my friend up and he told me it was a Savage model 340, I think?! It was amodel 300 something. Remington and Savage look a lot alike to me on some of their rifles. Sorry about that. I have a Savage 7mm Rem Mag and if this .22 Hornet shoots as well as my 7mm ill be tickeled to death with it.

Hopefully ill be shooting it tomorrow. If anything im getting a good scope out of the deal. Im assuming from your screen name your hunting with a .17 Remington. Do you load your own rounds? I was just wondering becasue ive read the velocity on this caliber and was amazed at the 4550 fps (if im remebering right). I was wondering that if you load your own rounds if you've been able to get it any faster?

I have been shooting a 17 since the early to mid 80's. I have never seen that kind of velocities. about 4100 fps with 25 gr rems and hornadys. I havent tried the smaller bullets and dont plan to. I think buker on here has tried it all. he may can give you more details than i can. Top velocities is not what I am after most of the time. Years of reloading has taught me that it is the rare gun that will perform with max velocities. There are exceptions to all rules but most of the time a small reduction in velocities will produce better groups. The little 17 bullet has its place. I like the fact that i can get a very accurate, flat shooting, lightweight rifle that has absolutely no recoil(relative) and can cut a blackbird out of a tree at 300 yds if the shooter does his job, It will kill coyotes with authority. I have taken it to bayous here and shot beavers and nutria as far as I can see them. there is never fear of a ricochet. I hunt around cattle for a lot of the ranchers in these parts. I can surgically remove a coyote from a field full of cattle and not fear a pass through or a ricochet.
The bottom line is as with all rounds available, each has its purpose. When used in its range it will make for a happy trip. You will find people that have had bad experiences with a cartridge and say with authority( That is not a good round I had a failure) I have been around this board for a few months and am still shocked by the flames reaped on some rounds and yet that round will be praised on the next post by another member. Most failures are caused by shooter error. (Bring on the flames) but I will stand by that comment.
I picked this name as a result of a post on here. I didnt even know about this board till after that hunt. I made a bad shot, Hit a shoulder bone at 100 yds and the bullet splashed. the angle was such that the bullet didnt enter. I do not call that a bullet failure. The bullet did what it was designed to do.I call it a shooter failure, I knew what gun I had in my hands, I knew what the bullet was capable of, I could have hit two inches to the right of where i hit and he would have dropped like a sack of rocks. So now someone will say, Why didnt u take a 223 and you wouldnt have had to worry about where the shot hit. Maybe, but if i had been shooting a 223 that day I would prob not have taken the shot. There were cows everywhere and in close proximity of the yote. When I first got the yote in my scope I was actually aiming at him under the belly of a cow. If the bullet passes through I have a very [beeep] farmer. I will continue to shoot the 17 because I understand the limits to it. Would a 223 have done a better job, Probably but we will never know for absolutely certain, since this is not what was used to hit this particular yote in this particular spot at this particular distance.
I know this a long post and rant and not what you asked (lol) I will shut up for now.

both of my Hornets like the Winchester 46grHP's for factory loads...

for reloading the best, most consistent loads I have found are made up with Lil-Gun powder... for the standard Hornet I load 13gr lil-gun with a 40gr V-Max and lite it off with a Federal sm Pistol primer... for the K-Hornet I up the charge to 13½gr of lil-gun and lite it off with a CCI BR primer, with the same bullet.. start with 12½gr loads just to be sure they're ok then go hotter if you need to...

one other thing to think about... was the 340 bored to .223 or to .224?... this will affect your bullet selection also... I've not had any experience with this particular rifle, so not sure...

The savage 340 is .224,nc deerhunter your gun is worth $175.00 in good condiction not counting the scope, you got a good deal IMHO. I loved my 340 in .22 hornet, but I had a hard time with the safty and my big thumb with gloves on in Michigans below zero winters.
