I've had my Ruger M77 Hornet since about 1992-93, and have shot many coyotes with it.
From my experiences, I limit my head-on shots to about 100yds, and will stretch it out to 150+ for broadside shots.
I tried 40gr, 45gr and 50gr bullets, from B-Tips and V-max to soft points and hollow points both Made-for-Hornet bullets and those for higher velocities., and I had runners and floppers with all of them.
Once I switched to Barnes X and XLC's, the number of runners and floppers reduced noticeably.
All that to say the Hornet will work on coyotes, within a 'reasonable' range and with a decent bullet.
