.22 Mag Pistol

I check alot of pastures of cattle and see alot of coyotes doing this. I need a pistol to carry on me while riding a 4-wheeler. What would be a good frame to carry that would take dirt and water well and be easy to keep clean? What length of barrel should I use? I don't like pistols that much but it seems its the obvious choice for safety and easy access. Any ideas?

Sure pasturepup a pistol will work and though I like a double action 2muchgun gave you good advice. My suggestion though is carry a rifle in a Koplin boot carrier or a set of rifle carriers on the front of your atv. A revolver even in 22 mag is really going to limit your range and ability to hit small targets such as coyotes.

Thousands of folks carry a scoped rifle on atv's with no problems and a 204 Ruger, 223, 22-250 or 243 is going to give you the range and accuracy to really whack coyotes instead of just shooting at them.

My 2 cents.

I usually have more things hanging off the ATV than necessary- fence stretchers, mineral bags, etc. Its not my ATV just use it for work. I usually can get within 20 yds of the coyotes because of the terrain. I am suprized they don't hear me comming and bolt. Usually they like to see what I am and then just casually trot the other direction.

Personally i would purchase a Ruger GP-100 6 inch in 357 mag and carry this for the 20 yard shot you are getting.

I have thought about the .357 due to its ability to shoot the .38 also. Didn't know how much kick it would give. My wrists aren't as good as they use to be.

I also own a single six in 32 H&R mag that has a lot more punch than the .22. It will push a 100gr JHP to roughly 1100fps. It also has a shorter (4.5"?) barrel and is less obtrusive to pack......

Recoil is almost nothing in the GP-100 or Smith with a good 125 gr HP . If you use 38 Ammo almost like shooting a 22 .

Hey a rifle is a good idea . If you are worried about beating it up get a SKS . They are cheap , shoot good , and a few dings make them look better .I have a little paratrooper that is about the size of a lever gun and I put it in racks on the old ATV just for shootin varmints.

The SP 101 or GP100 in 357 or 32 would be my pick if you cannot carry a rifle or carbine. The reason they let you get close is they have not been shot at, start shooting at them and they will avoid you like fleas

I'd stick with a revolver for the still work when dirty part, less moving parts and springs to get mucked up.

If you didn't want a small .357 mag revolver, then I'd suggest a Taurus 941 in 22 Mag. should hold up well, and still reach out and touch something. probably a 4 or 5 inch barrel.

I have a Heritage Manufacturing single action revolver.I bought one of the convertable ones but I dont shoot .22Mags out of it that much.I bought mine for about $180 and its a really good gun for the money. If you want something that you wont have to worry about getting scratched up or anything you might check them out.Im not sure but you could probably buy a NEF rifle for about that much money and have alot better luck hitting yotes with it.But I agree with what was said above though.A .357 would be a better pistol for coyotes and they arent much louder than a .22Mag.

I don't like a .22 mag in a pistol. In rifles the 22 mag fills a nice little nitch but in a pistol it's too weak.

The mag in a pistol is roughly the same velocity/energy as a hyper-velocity 22LR is out of a long gun. No one here is gonna tell you that any 22LR is a good round for coyotes or anything bigger than 10-15 lbs. Keeping that in mind, would a 22 mag in a pistol be any better for coyotes?. A good semi-auto 22LR rifle is a better coyote gun ( due to accuracy) than a 22 mag pistol. And 22LR rifles sucks on coyotes.

If you are stuck on wanting/needing a pistol I'll add in another vote for a .38/.357. Last I looked, I could buy .38 ammo for about the same price as 22 mag and it packs a much, much bigger punch. Another vote may be for a surplus 9mm marakov semi auto gun. You can still find them used for between $100 and $200 and again it packs more punch than the 22 mag. I think you can find ammo for it cheap too.

So many "good" options out there for a fairly cheap price why take something in the field that sucks?
