22 short Rifle!

Picked up this Kimber 82 Government with Unertl 2" target 15x scope for $700. This rifle had belonged to a local gunsmith that rechambered it to .22Short only. Does anyone know why someone would rechamber a rifle to fire shorts only?

So they can have a .22 short rifle?....I have no idea. He didn't like the thought of having a pellet gun that didn't burn powder I guess. There ain't no tellin.
 
I still have no idea why he rechambered it, He also stamped over the original caliber markings with .22 SHT. I received several boxes of ELEY Match, CCI HV hollow points, CCI Target, and CCI CB shorts with this rifle. I am planning on shooting it this evening to see how it does, before deciding if I am going to have it rechambered back to 22LR.
 
It makes 22 shorts more accurate. A 22 Short has to make a long jump from the bullet to the rifling in a chamber cut for 22 long rifle. That long jump reduces accuracy significantly. 22 Shorts are much more quiet to shoot than long rifle and have plenty of power for most small game.
 
i would get it cut to 22lr again just for ammo cost savings and ease of acquiring ammo for it.

get a good match chamber done, and have them put a nice fresh recessed target crown on the other end and that thing should be a tack driver.


when 22 went to unicorn status during the panic - shorts were into the Unobtainium class of hard to find.... they were almost as hard to get your hands on as 17hm2.....

a gun that you cant reload for, in an RELATIVELY obscure chambering (at least now adays), is about is useful as 1 sheet of single ply toilet paper.



[edit] or just buy you a lifetime supply of whatever brand of shorts it likes now, while they're available.

Well just got a call from a buddy who is helping clear out the gunsmiths shop, apparently he had a target and backstop setup in the shop so he could shoot inside. guess the mystery is now solved as to why he rechambered to 22 short.

I did some initial testing on my pellet gun range in the back yard this morning with some CCI CB shorts at 25 yards. first group was 2 rounds to check zero then a five shot group. Not bad considering the wobbly table I was shooting from.

You could throw the rifle away and still be a good deal. The scope is worth more than you paid for the rifle.

ETA: The rifle is no slouch either.

50 years ago people used 22 shorts hollow points to squirrel hunt with. You do not need Long Rifle. Browning 22 autos came in short, The selling point of rifles was they would shoot short, long or long rifle. I shoot CB caps here at home makes less noise than my air rifle. I would not change a thing on the rifle. The scope could get you $1000 on ebay.
 

Yep, in days gone by, 22 shorts were more popular. I have a Browning auto that Willy mentioned, that shoots shorts only. Sweet little rifle. I also have a Winchester 62-A hammer 22 short gallary gun that was used at fairs back in the day. Back then 22 rifles seemed to be more revered than today.

You have a nice rifle. My thoughts are to keep it as it is and enjoy it.
 
One of the worst things about the .22 ammo shortage was not being able to find shorts or CB's at all. I shoot CB's in my "yard gun" quite a bit.
