22 short

Most guys can't handle the recoil of a 22 short. But if you can, it would probably blow the eyes right outta it's head!

Good grief. WHY, WHY, WHY..

well thanks for no input other than criticism, that is why i dont post much. you guys are so quick to say oh no never do that. instead why dont you answer if you have actually had experience with the question. after i do it ill let you know how it goes.

i have and still use 22 shorts to dispatc trapped animals including coyotes and a well placed head shot from a rifle at that distance wii put the hurt on

Most people around here will use 22 shorts on trapped coyotes at point blank range. I have seen them require more than one shot due to the bullet not penetrating the skull at pistol velocity.

30yds is 29 to far!

You may be right; maybe I didn't have enough information when I first replied and answered as a smartazz. Please understand that in a world that highlights and seems to celebrate stupidity at every turn it is sometimes difficult to not be at the least a bit “snarky” when at first glance a question seems so ridiculous. Given your indignation at the snarky replies I am now guessing there is a perfectly rationale reason for the question. In order to get a better framed answer you shouldn’t mind providing more information to those you are quizzing. May I ask the reasoning of why you would choose a .22 Short for the task? May I also ask how much experience you have hunting and killing coyotes?

If you're trying the short because you can't find or don't have any long rifle, I could spare a few rounds.

Otherwise, unless the coyote is in a trap, in which case you should get much closer than 30 yards, the question of WHY still begs an answer.

Sorry, but that's about as *non criticizing* as I can get on this question.

I have some 22 shorts, can use it in a bolt action. In my semi autos -both rifle & pistol- they don't have enough energy to cycle the action. I can use them in those guns as a single shot that must be manually cleared.

I would expect them to work fine at very close range, as mentioned trapped animals, but would expect them to be unreliable on coyotes at any distance.

Would I be guessing correctly that you are looking for a
something that's a little quieter ?

A .22 short is going to be underpowered for a 30 yard shot on
a coyote.

You have your answer in Snarky and Un-Snarky versions...the answer is the same...22 short is not the round for a 30 yard shot...even if it is a head shot. You might kill one, but you also might just make him mad....or worse wound and not kill.

Head shots are a low percentage shot to begin with.
Head shots with a 22 short aren't even worth discussing regardless of your reasons and will likely end up with inhumane results.

I'd also suggest not making posts like that if you're thin skinned or only want to hear answers that agree with your intentions.

22lr will do it nearly every time. 22short might do it half the time. I used to run 22 shorts for trapping dispatch and they didn't work every time.

That begs the question, why do you ask? You got smartA responses because we assume your post is kind of a joke. Look at the ten thousand "is an HMR enough gun for coyote" threads. The vast majority of PM members are very concerned with the ethical kill of what we hunt. That is why we can be harsh on questions like yours.

I spend time on many different forums and Predator Masters is by far the MOST friendly forum I know of. You post that question on most other forums and you would have been lambasted!

So back to my question, is there a real reason for your question?

In any case, the answer is still NO! 22LR is not enough gun, and head shots are too risky in most situations IMHO.

iam going to be by livestock. dont want to scare them at all. turkeys tend to be jumpy. so i am going to give it a try. and i am not thin skinned. just wanted some experience, not some bs response.

Sorry tuff guy, but I don't consider "head-shots are low percentage" a "bs responce".
And no, I don't have any actual experience with this scenario but that's probably due to the fact that I have a brain.

BTW,,, what do turkey's have to do with coyotes and cows?

If you are just wanting them to leave your turkeys alone, you can shoot them with shorts and change their mind about turkey for lunch but if you shot at 100 of them , I would say you might kill less than 5 at best. Try some snares where they come into your livestock areas for better results , then use your shorts. Jim
