22 WMR question

instantdeath,
Nobody is going to ban you for posting what you think. But really, to say the 22mag is a 200 yard coyote rifle is stretching it and surely is not going to be "instantdeath" for the coyote.

Jack

1 Marlin likes the winchester 34gr. supremes and the other Marlin likes the remington 33 gr. They both are sighted in for 100 yards, both give me 1 1/8-1 1/4" 3 shot groups /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gifI keep my shooting at 100 yards or less.

Would you like a Video of the next time i Go shooting? I just bought that nifty little Film your own hunt thing from Walmart. 200 yds with a 35 gr v-maxx Coyote Killer will be instant death for a dog at that range. Lets do a little Math. Would you agree that shooting a dog in the head or vital area point blank with a .22lr will kill them? I know it will. a 40 gr .22 lr arrives at around 100 to 110 ft-lbs at the muzzle I have the numbers right here. Now a 35 gr V-maxx coyote killer coming from the muzzle at 2265 fps is producing 399 ft-lbs of energy. It's true im looking at the figures. Now at 50 yds it is producing 290 ft-lbs. At 100 yds its producing 207 ft-lbs. At 150 yds its producing 147 ft-lbs of energy at 1375 fps, Still smokin. ok now 175 yds 125 ft-lbs at 1267 fps, Still hyper sonic meaning still stable. at 200 yds That same bullet is providing 107 ft-lbs of energy at 1175 fps with only a 12 inch drop with a 100 yd zero. So indeed it still has the same power as a .22 lr from the muzzle with a more energy expendable bullet. the same power that will kill at point blank range froma .22 lr.
As a matter of a fact it doesnt drop below 100 ft-lbs until it hits 225 yds. All calculations were done with current temperature, Humidity, Barometric pressure, and elevation. with a 5mph cross wind. The 35 gr coyote killer retains its power and velocity at that range due to its Ballistic coefficient of .109 if the bullet had the BC as the remington bullet which is .137 WOW big change even more devistating.

My Volquartsen likes the Rem 33's best at 100 and my Ruger 10-22mag heavy barrel likes Win std HP's. Rem 33's give me about 1" at 100.

Instanddeath, I would have to agree with Jack on both accounts in his post.

I do believe the point of this forum was to find out info in Darknight's .22 magnum then all of a sudden you come in here talkin about 221 fireball this centerfire that. So yes What ever darknight wants to do with his .22 magnum it is his perogative. All the guy wanted to know was about ammo for a .22 magnum. Not .221 fireball this and centerfire that . Geez. Maybe he like myself likes his .22 magnum, Maybe just maybe it is all he has probably not but hypothetically maybe so. You absolutly added NO useful information to his subject.

I guess you are Dark Night's spokesperson? You speak for him and are authorized to seperate the useful information from the not as useful info? Interesting how you took that role on. Personally, I don't think that's it at all. I think you are having a panic attack because I'm calling bull$hit on your 200 yard coyote killing and "instant death" on coyotes at such ranges with a .22 Magnum. To make a blanket statement that the .22 Magnum will do anything a person needs done is simply not true and shows real ignorance. Even if a charitable person keeps that remark confined within the realm of predator hunting, no experienced coyote hunter and knowledgable shooter will give you credibility with that statement. Coyotes ain't crows dude. I can only guess from your post you already know it all, however, if I could offer one bit of advise - rethink your strategy here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Well i guess we will have to agree to disagree and for the record Im no ones spokes person. And as far as credibility, Who needs it? I can prove my findings what about you?

Well, I think that sums up everything quite handily... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

WOW!!! I get busy with vet school for a day and look how alive this post became! I do appreciate all the advice from guys that are far more knowledgeable and experienced with these things than I am. Thanks to all of you gentlemen because I have learned so much from all of you in the short time that I have been on this board.

I will steer away from any confrontation to the tune of, "my gun will kill them at 300 yds, or mine will shoot a mosquito at 50 yds." Too much emotion there for me!

I have read every post on this thread (and many others /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) and will take that knowledge and experience with me to the range, put it on paper, and show you what I find.

Oh, and rest easy, I choose to limit my shots to 100 yds and under and am very picky about shot presentation. Nothing makes my stomach sicker than seeing a wounded animal run off to suffer because of a poorly placed shot. I guess that's the "veterinarian to be" in me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Good luck in school and in the field while hunting. With such solid decision making skills and good judgement, you'll do fine in both venues.

Darknight - The groups you are shooting are fine for the 22 mag.

I'll offer up the 22 mag field experience I have had. I've owned a 22 mag in one variation or another many years, and they are a fun little gun to shoot, but ammo is a bit expensive.

I have a little bit of coyote/bobcat killin' experience with the 22 mag. And I mean just a little bit. Only 2 bobcats and 5 coyotes. All except 1 was shot under 75 yards with Winchester 40 gr JHP. Both cats were recovered in under 90 yards, and 5 out of 5 coyotes died. But only 4 of the coyotes were recovered on the day of the shot. No bangs flops, and all dogs did the classic spin and run. They were all hit behind the shoulder except the one I did not recover the same day.

The coyote I lost was shot face on about 50 yards with CCI 33 grain +V. Found him a week later, not far away while deer scouting.

When I use the 22 mag ( forced by law or landowner ) in a few situations, I must pass up shots that are easily made with a centerfire. Its kind of like bowhunting, you just have to let X amount of animals walk. Can't make a shot out of nothing, as you will just wound.

Limit your shots to 75 yards and under, perfect broadside, on a standing animal. Hit them tight befind the shoulder, and they will not run too far. Keep your eye on them after the shot, and watch them as far as possible. I prefer some tracking snow before hunting with the 22 mag.

Don't care what ammo folks use, Vmax or otherwise, its still a 22 mag, and a 100 yard shot is pushing the envelope very, very hard. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Remember, you will HAVE to let some walk, and as long as you are OK with that, you're all set.

Well guys, I did a little shooting off my sandbag set up on my truck this morning. Here's what I managed to do with the Remington Premiers. The top right target is 5 shots at 100 yds with the sandbag set on the tonneau and bed of the pickup and me leaning against the side of the truck. The bottom right target is with me laying in the back of the truck in prone position with the sandbag. Hopefully this will be clear enough for you guys to see...

Well, it's a little small so I don't even know if you can see the groups. Let me know if you cannot see it clearly and I'll try to blow it back up to a larger size....

DarkNight

and thanks for the well wishes with vet school. At 31, I realize I'm just a kid to most of you, but these "kids" that are my classmates are giving me a run for my money!!!!

Hey Darknight I've been huntin yotes for about 12 years with a 22 mag .I have found the 50 gr Fedral hollow point to be the best "killer" . My self imposed limit is 75 yards and I use a Brno ZKM611 automatic cause when they start spinnin I always put another round or 2 through them . Your groups look good to me .My Brno gives me about 1.5 MOA with no wind . My buddy uses Win 40 gr HP's and they seem about as good as the fedrals .FYI Fedral has discontinued this load but there are plenty out there .
