.22 wmr .vs .17hmr which one ??

That's fairly normal with .22 LR. If I clean my bore, it takes 20 rounds or so before it shoots good groups again.
Also, changing to a different type of ammo makes it open up for a while, also.
And there's no pitting in my bore, it's new and looks like a mirror, it's just the way it is.

I'd say that's pretty good considering the quality of .22 mag. ammo. They churn that stuff out like popcorn and the priming compound and method of ignition isn't exactly "match grade" technology.

tntrapper, Lots of guns like the barrel a little to a lot dirty and group the best then, don't know why. Most of my rifles like dirty barrels. I know we aren't talking 22 lr but even switching from one ammo to another with different lubricant coatings changes everything for a few shots. So you could have been shooting the same ammo and lot number an still seen a variation from a clean barrel. If you have a gun that likes it dirty (ooh that sounds bad) you may need to shoot it till it is well fowled. Then it may go back to what you were seeing when you first shot it. Check it out its fun at any rate.

Sounds like typical 22 mag accuracy!:) Get a 17 hummer, the make of the rifle doesn't matter they all will shoot at least 1" groups at 100 yards.

Get both!

22 mag is a decent 100 yard plinker which has more ooomph than the 17HMR which has more range (150yds).

Depending on the hit, I have seen huge holes blown in vermin with the VMAX round in both 22 Mag and 17 HMR.

I have both, and they are both fun to shoot and cheap.

I'd rather use a centerfire as someone else posted earlier when shooting yotes for an ethical kill. 22 Mag and 17HMR for the smaller creatures.

Never shot a 17HMR but have a lot of experience with a 22LR M39A and a Marlin 883 in 22mag. I carried the 22lr in the jeep for hogs. One shot in the brain out to 50 yards, works every time. With the 22mag it went out to 100 or so yds on hogs, all sizes.... Longest was about 150 yds. I could not even guess at how many hogs and other critters those two guns have killed, a bunch. I think that the largest grizzly bear was killed with a 22lr by an Indian woman. It all depends on the gun and shooter.

22 mag for me. I had a 17HMR and it shot well at 50 yards but at 100 it was all over the place. I'm not a big fan of light bullets. My 22 mag in my Marlin shoots great up to 100 yds. Would be deadly on coyotes up to 50 yds

I am suprised that people prefer the .22 mag. I feel I can shoot the 17hmr quite a bit farther. They seem to be about equal as far as impact on small creatures. Very good crow medicine.

That's interesting because that is just the opposite that most of us find. Matter of fact, I have yet to see accuracy wize a .22 mag with will hang with a .17 HMR at 100 yards and beyond. After buying my .17 HMR a few years ago I never bought another box of .22 Mag ammo. I had 5 shots in a dime at 100 yards with my very first box of .17 HMR ammo. That sold me.

thanks guys ,, i went and traded that one in and got a savage .22mag it was shooting a quater size groups at 100yrds with 30 grain v-max , im very happy with it

I have a .22 lr and a .17 hmr. Never owned a .22 wmr. I do like my hummer, it shoots dimes at 75 yds. havent had it to 100 yds. yet. Would never use it on a yote personally.

neither is a great choice for a yote unless it is really close and then the 22 mag wins but either way a dead yote is a good yote so I dont care if it runs off as long as it dies. But in the accuracy department the 17 blows away the 22 mag hands down. I have said it many times they both have their place and I wouldnt be with out either but I shoot my 17 probably 50 to 1 over my mag

I went to Bass Pro Shops near me here (Pearland, TX) and went looking for ammo. The shelf had 29 boxes of Rem 17HMR, 4 bricks of Rem 17HMR, and 9 boxes of Win 17HMR. But NONE of the 22Mags.

On another note, Bass Pro Shops are starting to carry reloading components. I did pick-up a brick of Rem 7 1/2 primers and a box of Horn 40gr V-Max's (250 pack). They had reloading powder in the back room but I didn't need any.

There is hope yet!!!

Actually 17hmr has less wind drift then a 22 mag.

I see you got what you wanted and I hope it works out well for you. Those Savages are accurate. I was going to suggest a Stevens 200 in 223 and use reduced loads. You can cover alot of territory with handloading. I can reduce load for 22 wmr to full power loads. With the reduced loads you can see impact ashots, lots of fun. very versital. ThomasR
