For years, I have read about people taking "neck" shots at deer & coyotes.
I've always wondered why anyone would purposely do this?

Because a high-powered rifle round to the neck is sure death. I don't believe you could shoot through a deer or elk's neck with a .30 caliber or bigger rifle and have them survive. I never saw it happen, anyway. Normally they drop like they've been hit with a howitzer, DRT. I did see a moose bleed out standing, but he never took a step. Severed carotid artery with a .308 Win. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Lurker,
If you hit too low for the spine, the critter may drop because of the shock to the nerve cluster in the neck. However, after they get their wits, they'll get up and run like h3ll. Far and fast. You've injured the windpipe and throat and the animal is doomed to die an ugly death. The hunters odds of recovering an animal hit this way are slim.

Shoot too high, again the critter will drop like a sack of bricks. But miss the spine high and the animal if allowed will regain their feet and be gone. This shot they are likely to survive. Again, the hunter will probably have trouble recovering this animal. Most likely will not in fact get this one.

Gotta hit the actual spine to kill quickly and anchor the animal without more shooting needed. Tricky thing is many people think the spine always is in the center of the neck. Not always so...

I have killed foxes with the Remington LR HP and i have killed them with IC 20 ga Ithaca Pump and number 8 shot. Foxes aren't that hard to kill if you place the shot right and the 22 lr will kill them very well as long as you keep your shots around 40 yards and under. For coyote the 06 would be the best choice with any expanding deer bullet. As far as Bobs are concerned they are tougher than Foxes but i believe you could hunt them successfully with the 22 LR as long as you waited for the perfect shot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

yeah but come on...... In truth if you waited for the ultimalte perfect shot you could kill a Grizzly with a slingshot.

But really if a 22lr is all you have then ya best put a lot of time in at the range and be able to put every shot exectally where ya want it. Best to use the best ammo you can get for your 22 and if your gona spend that kind of money on ammo and all that time at the range you would be better off in the long run to get a center fire or a shotgun.

As stated, shot placement is key, but if I were to use a .22lr, I'd check to see if the Aguila hypersonics grouped well in your rifle. They're clocked at 1750fps and have almost as much energy as a .17HMR (not startin nothin, I'm just saying). I would limit it to 75 yds and head shots only though. As far as I'm concerned, I'd use a .22lr if I wasn't serious about killin the yote and was testing myself against the yote. Otherwise, this is a GREAT opportunity (and excuse) for you to pick up a .223 at least. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
