220 swift handload, 55gr. bullet over R15

I've gotten my materials together to work up a handload for my 220 swift. 55 grain bullet over 39 grains of R15, max. load. I'm seeing the same load in a couple of different places but the velocities listed vary by a good margin.
Does anyone here have some firsthand experience with this combination?

I have used the 52 gr. A-max with 36 gr of RL15 in both a 220 swift and 22-250 Savage 12 FVSS. Both grouped at .5" w/ no signs of pressure. I cannot find the data sheet from 55 gr v-max, but I was essential using the same loads for each, just got better results with the A-max. I am still developing loads for both with IMR 3031/4064 and H414.

I shoot 37 grains in my .220 VSSF, with good results, but have found 41 grains of H380, to be thee most accurate powder in that rifle with 55gr nosler BT's. IMR-4895 shot well with V-Max, Sierra, and the Nosler, was second, followed by IMR-4041 with Seirra 53gr Macth King Hollow Points. Hope this helps. Butcher

One of my standard loads for my Swift is 38.5gr RL15 with a 55 gr Ballistic Tip. Also have good luck with 42gr AA2700 with the same bullet. These particular loads work well in one of my Swift's, in the other they're too hot and need to be backed down a bit. Velocities and pressure's will vary depending on a lot of factors so it's always wise to start low and work up to what your gun likes.

Good Luck.

I run 38.5 grains of RL15 topped with 55gr V-Max. My guns(4) will vary velocity anywhere from 3800 to 3850. I tend to get more out of my 26" barrels. Good load and super accurate for my factory Remingtons. I wouldn't be afraid to load on up to 39gr. I found a sweet spot and have stayed with it.

My rifle has always shot best with IMR4064. However my shooting buddy is using the same load as you are going to try with the RL15. It the most accurate thing he's ever used in his .220 Swift I'd say give it a try without hesitation.

S99,
My swift is a 700 classic. My two best loads, so far, with 55gr. BT's are 39.0 RL 15 and 38.5 IMR 4064. Either Federal GMM's or CCI BR primers work well, with maybe a slight edge to the Federals. Neither show signs of excessive pressure, BUT the leade in my factory barrel is so long that I can't seat my bullets long enough to come anywhere near the lands, and still have enough purchase on the bullet to keep it in the mouth of the case! That much freebore is sure to reduce pressure to some extent. Actually I'm surprised that it shoots as well as it does, around 3/4" for 5 shots @ 100 yds.
I have not chronographed the RL 15 load, but the 4064 load was running an average in the 3790's. YMMV....
Good luck!

I worked up a load for my vet's 220 -52 gr speer HP (with the big hole) I don't remember the amount of powder or the primer (gave that info to him with the test targets), but I think WLR primers. 3/8"- groups @ 100 meters. .367 if I remember correctly.

ANY of you guys spitting them out of a Rem. 700? I have a classic and want to try my 55 gr. noslers in it.

I'm using the same gun... Rem. 700 Classic.

My two weird Swifts ,Purple & Syco, are Classics. Over the years Purp and this load have busted more dogs than most folks do in a life time. Go with the V-Maxes. They shoot the same as BT's but cheaper.

Me too

Oooh Yeah Mr. Bob. That is sweet indeed!

That's what we're looking for... nice, consistent, sub-MOA groups, and a little speed won't hurt either.
I guess that's a 100 yard group. ~ 1" high at 100 will get you at less than 2" low at 300 if I remember it right at ~ 3800 fps and up.

I'd like to thank all of you folks for the information here. I'm hoping the 55 gr. V-max over RL15 is gonna work out for me but its nice to know there are several other good choices I can make too.

OK guys, help me out here, I'm kinda computer challenged and I've never posted a picture to an internet forum. I've got some pictures of a couple groups that I shot with the swift today, but I have no clue how to post them. Any detailed information would be most appreciated!

Oops! Wrong picture! That is a comparison between RL 15 and IMR 4064 with the 55 gr BT's at 200 yards. I'll try that 100 yd group again...
