220 swift load

I acquired a Ruger tang safety bull barrel 220 swift. Planning on loading it with some 60gr Hornady HPs. Looking for a good starting point. I know every gun shoots different but am curios if anyone has a load for this same type of rifle and bullet. I am looking more for accuracy than fps. Would rather be shooting prairie rats than sitting at the range working up loads this time of year.

How about both, IMR-4831 with the 60's. 39.0 is the starting load, 43.0 is the max. Right out of the Nosler #6 manual. It will top out around 3715 fps.

IMR-4350 will work too, just not quiet as fast. 3650 fps.

+1 4831 works the best for me.

Are you stuck on 60 grain bullets here? I bought the first tang safety Ruger M77V Swift that I ever saw. That was around 1974 or 1975. Back then that gun adored the Sierra 52 grain HPBT with 43 grains if IMR 4350 pushing it along. That load provided me with my first ever 5 in one hole group. Another old favorite is 35 grains of IMR 3031 with the Hornady 55 grain SX bullet.

If you want to try even a bit lighter you can really zip along a 40 grain bullet with 43 grains of H-414. That load will just atomize a ground squirrel. I killed a bajillion with it.

I have a .220 Swift I got about a year ago, and I am using IMR-4007 SSC and I think they invented that powder for the Swift.

55gr bullets at 4,100+ fps and no signs of pressure... and small groups.

I'm not too sure I am following you here, Ridgeline. Could you explain what this means?

Wow, just when I start doing some research on a new (to me) powder. You must be a mind reader, or we think on the same wavelength. Speed junkies, it's a sickness.

Yup no one buys a .220 Swift cuz it's so slow

RL-15 did very well for me with a Sierra 60gr HP, the load I used was pretty mild only about 3500fps but it was incredibly accurate. I scored many headshots with that rifle/load combo, groundhogs never new what hit them.

Decided to try a couple different powders and bullets. Now if the wind would ever let up i could see how they do.

Hornady 60gr HP with H380

Hornady 50gr VMAX with H4895

Nosler 50gr BT with H380
